CHICAGO- The University of Illinois Chicago baseball team scored a combined 33 runs and pounded out a combined 25 hits to sweep a doubleheader over Cleveland State at Les Miller Field on Saturday.
The Flames (6-12, 3-0 Horizon League) won the first game 15-5 before taking the nightcap by a final of 18-2. The twinbill sweep also gave UIC a sweep of the league-opening three-game series against the Vikings (3-13, 0-3 Horizon League).
Andy Leonard went 5-for-10 with four doubles and four RBI during the doubleheader, while Brandon Harwell was 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and four walks on the day. Read the rest of this entry »

Share I will occasionally check in throughout the season on some random thoughts on the college baseball action that has taken place over the last few days.
What is the problem with Florida State? They have lost five out of their last six games with losses to North Florida, Jacksonville, Auburn, and Boston College (twice). None of those teams are going to be contenders for a College World Series title. Read the rest of this entry »

Share There was two substantial upsets on Thursday night. The biggest upset was Illinois-Chicago scoring two runs in the top of the ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodors. Texas A&M 8 Wright State 5
Sophomores Caleb Shofner and Brooks Raley had four hits each on Sunday afternoon as No. 1 Texas A&M rallied for an 8-5 win over Wright State and a series sweep before 3,207 fans at Olsen Field.

I was able to get away from work and make it out to Disch Falk Field by the 2nd inning. It was a great Friday Afternoon to take in a game of baseball. Texas open the game with Sophomore Chance Ruffin and UI-C counter with junior left-hander Chris Kovacevich.
The Longhorns manufactured one run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Travis Tucker led off the frame with a single through the right side of the infield. A sacrifice bunt by Brandon Loy and a wild pitch pushed Tucker to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Belt.

INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Illinois at Chicago has been picked to win the 2009 Horizon League Baseball Championship in balloting by the conference’s seven head coaches.
UIC received 36 points and the maximum six first-place votes as coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. The Flames posted a 35-22 overall record and 17-6 Horizon League mark a season ago en route to their fourth conference crown in six years. Read the rest of this entry »

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team unveiled its 2009 schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with a season-opening series against perennial national power Texas beginning a challenging slate for the defending Horizon League champion Flames.
UIC’s campaign begins a month from now against the Longhorns on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m. in Austin, Texas. That is the first of a four-game set against Texas, which is ranked fourth in Baseball America’s Preseason Top 25 Rankings. Read the rest of this entry »

Chicago, Ill.- University of Illinois at Chicago athletic director Jim Schmidt announced on Monday, Dec. 8 that head baseball coach Mike Dee has signed a five-year contract.

Baseball Program Holds 11th Annual Bullpen Golf Outing. Event raised nearly $40,000 for the baseball program.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s baseball program hosted its 11th annual Bullpen Golf Outing at Pelham Country Club in Pelham Manor, N.Y., on July 28. The event, with title sponsor Chartwells, raised over $40,000 to benefit the Red Storm baseball program.
