ST. LOUIS – Missouri State, which returns a dominating veteran pitching staff and solid depth from last year’s Missouri Valley Conference runner-up squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving eight of nine first place votes.
The Bears tallied 80 points and were a sound favorite over second-place pick Creighton (66 points). 2008 champion Wichita State, who secured the remaining first-place vote and 63 points overall, was picked to finish in the third position. Read the rest of this entry »

Six commit to Virginia Tech baseball in early signing period
The Virginia Tech baseball coaching staff announced on Wednesday the official signing of five players to National Letters of Intent for the 2009-10 school year, as well as the addition of one transfer from an SEC school.
The new signees scheduled to join the Hokies for the 2010 season include outfielder/first baseman Tyler Horan of Boston College High School in Middleboro, Mass., pitcher Joe Mantiply of Tunstall High School in Danville, Va., catcher Chad Morgan of Paul VI Catholic High School in Springfield, Va., pitcher/first baseman Patrick Scoggin of Douglas S. Freeman High School in Richmond, Va., and shortstop/pitcher Brent Zimmerman of Nova High School in Cooper City, Fla. Also joining Tech in 2010 will be shortstop Tim Smalling, a Raleigh, N.C., native who spent the past two seasons starting for the University of Arkansas.

Columbia, S.C. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson struck out eight batters in a career-high seven innings and Reese Havens hit his seventh home run of the year as South Carolina defeated College of Charleston 5-3 on Wednesday evening at Sarge Frye Field. The Gamecocks improve to 16-6 on the year while the loss drops College of Charleston to 16-8. Brian Jett collected three hits and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning leading Indiana State to a 6-3 win over College of Charleston in college baseball action before 471 at Patriots Point Stadium on Sunday.

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team dropped the final game of the three-game series to the Indiana State Sycamores, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Red McEwen Field.

TAMPA, Fla. – A single by sophomore Victor Pina in the bottom of the 12th gave the University of South Florida baseball team a 6-5 victory over the Indiana State Sycamores Saturday night at Red McEwen Field.
“For us to win there must be a hero every night,” said head coach Prado. “Tonight it was Victor Pina.”
The heroics started earlier in the game when in the bottom of the ninth and the bases loaded, junior Chris Rey crushed a 3-2 fastball over the left field wall, tying the game at five, and sending the game into extra innings.
