Raleigh, N.C. - Reese Havens’ two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted South Carolina to a 7-5 win over James Madison in NCAA Regional action in Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. The win eliminates JMU from the tournament and puts the Gamecocks in a game with NC State later this evening with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm at Doak Field. Carolina is now 40-22 on the year. The 40-win total marks the ninth straight season that the Gamecocks have recorded 40-plus victories, the only SEC school to accomplish the feat from 2000-08. CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 31, 2008 - Trailing 10-2 at the halfway point, James Madison fought back to outscore Charlotte 11-1 over the next two and a half innings and held on for a 13-12 win in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon in the Raleigh Regional of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Championship at Doak Field at Dail Park.

“I think that was a great college baseball game,” commented JMU head coach Spanky McFarland. “Obviously there were mistakes made by both teams, but you had two clubs that fought and clawed and didn’t want to go home. Raleigh, N.C. - Justin Smoak went 4-for-4 with three RBI and James Darnell and DeAngelo Mack added a pair of three-run homers as South Carolina opened up NCAA Regional play with a 15-8 win over Charlotte on Friday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. at Doak Field. The Gamecocks advance to the winner’s bracket and will meet the winner of today’s NC State-James Madison game on Saturday evening at 7 pm. The NC State Wolfpack will host a Regional this year in Raleigh NC. They will be joined by James Madison, Charlotte, and South Carolina. NC State has a record of 38-20 while going a respectful 18-11 in the ACC. James Madison comes in with a 38-17 record with a 20-9 record in the CAA. The Charlotte 49ers enter with a 43-14 record with a 19-8 record in the Atlantic 10. The South Carolina Gamecocks enter with a 38-21 record while being 15-15 in the SEC. JOHNSON CITY, Tenn., May 6, 2008 – Freshman Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) pitched seven innings of shutout relief and James Madison University overcame an early four run deficit for an 8-4 non-conference baseball victory over East Tennessee State University on Tuesday night at Cardinal Park.

STATESBORO, Ga. - With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth Jeremiah Parker (Carrollton/Carrollton) hit a grounder down the third base line. Ty Wright (Montrose/West Laurens) slid and beat Matt Arnold’s throw home as Georgia Southern pulled out a 6-5 Southern Conference win over The Citadel. The Eagles (28-19 overall, 12-9 SoCon) took 2-of-3 from the Bulldogs over the weekend.

Wright was hit by a Matt Reifsnider (4-4) pitch to start the ninth. Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) sacrificed Wright to second then Chris Shehan (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) was intentionally walked. Matt Crim, the Friday night starter, walked Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) to load the bases. Parker hit a soft grounder down the third base line. BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Collin Cowgill and Ryan Wilkes delivered solo home runs, lifting the 17th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats to a 2-1 victory over state rival Western Kentucky – sweeping the two-game season series - in front of a WKU school-record 3,057 fans at Nick Denes Field.

Kentucky (31-10, 9-9 Southeastern Conference) got the only two runs it needed from Cowgill and Wilkes. Cowgill’s home run was his 16th of the season, good for second in the NCAA, three behind Georgia shortstop Gordon Beckham’s 19 homers on the year. FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second straight contest, the TCU Horned Frogs found themselves trailing heading into the ninth inning only to rally to tie the game. This time the Frogs needed three runs to tie the game at four, but Oklahoma broke the tie in the 12th inning to take a 5-4 victory Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Junior outfielder Tyler Odle went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and scored five runs in leading Alabama to a 12-4 win over Mississippi Valley State Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

Odle is the first Alabama player to score five runs in a game since Casey Lambert scored five runs in the Crimson Tide’s 26-7 win at Kentucky on March 18, 2001. Odle was hit by a pitch and scored in the first inning and slammed his first home run of the season in the third inning to give the Tide a 2-0 lead. Towson, Md. - The George Mason baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon when the Patriots scored five runs in the first three innings and then held off Towson over the final six as Mason beat the Tigers, 5-4.

Mason scored in the first when Chris Henderson and Justin Bour hit two-out singles and Scott Krieger brought home Henderson with a single to left. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Paul Juliano hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to help William and Mary earn a 9-4 victory against Delaware on a cold and rainy afternoon at Plumeri Park on Sunday. With the triumph, W&M claimed the series against UD and improves its record to 18-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

In addition to the grand slam, Juliano went 2-for-2 with five RBI. The Northfield, N.J., native also drew three walks as he reached base in all five of his trips to the plate. Senior Greg Maliniak also hit a home run, while classmate Tim Park went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Junior Jeff Jones came up big with a 2-for-4 effort and scored twice. Read the rest of this entry »
