CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The heart of the order combined to drive in eight runs in a 9-5 win for No. 1 North Carolina over Liberty Wednesday at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. Mark Fleury belted a two-run home run, and Garrett Gore and Kyle Seager each doubled and drove in three to help Carolina (4-1) bounce back from its first loss of the season. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, the coaches voted Radford senior infielder Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Share Jim Toman hopes to lead Flames to 2009 NCAA Bid
The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with various head coaches around the nation. We recently had a chance to talk with Jim Toman of Liberty University. He is currently entering his second season with the Flames after spending the last 11 years on Ray Tanner’s staff. He spent seven years previously under Tanner at NC State. He had a successful first season with the Flames which saw him lead the team to the Big South Championship game. Share All Things Valley League has put together a Top 15 of the best hitters in the league during the 2008 season. The list is led by Florida International’s Tyler Townsend who had an outstanding summer with Winchester. He finished the season with a .387 average with 12 homers and 36 RBI in only 42 games. He also stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. Brandon Sizemore of College of Charleston comes in the runners up spot. He had a .377 average with 10 homers and 34 RBI. The rest of the top 5 is filled out by Marcus Nidfiffer (Kentucky), Drew Johnson (San Francisco), and Mickey Wiswall (Boston College). Lynchburg, Va. – The Liberty Baseball program and Head Coach Jim Toman have announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letter of Intents during the NCAA Early signing period. After four years as Stetson’s pitching coach Garrett Quinn has resigned so that he can accept the same position at Liberty University.
In his four years handling the pitching staff for Stetson Quinn has coached two All-Americans, seven All-Conference performers, and nine A-Sun Pitchers of the Week. The Hatters finished this past season 7th in the Atlantic Sun in ERA at 5.68. The staff was led by junior Andy Maudlin who was 1st in the conference in wins with seven and 4th in ERA at 3.61.

VBL Week Seven Players of the Week
Max Most, Staunton, OF, Jr., Port Washington, N.Y. (Old Dominion)
Most was an on-base machine for the Braves, reaching safely in 20 of 29 plate appearances for a .690 on-base percentage. The ODU Monarch led the league with a .571 batting average, going 12-for-21 with two doubles. He scored seven runs, drove in four, and led the league with eight walks. Adding to his arsenal, Most also shared the league lead with six steals. For the season, he is batting .364 with 25 runs, 10 doubles, 15 RBIs, 21 walks, 19 steals, and a .447 on-base percentage. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Scott Jackson, who has extensive experience as an assistant coach throughout Southeastern college baseball, has been named an assistant baseball coach at the University of North Carolina, head coach Mike Fox announced Tuesday. Jackson, who joins the Tar Heels after one season at Liberty, will work with the offense, including hitting and base running, as well as infield play. Rucinski, a right-handed freshman from Ohio State, had a notable week with eight strikeouts and three hits, all singles, against him while pitching seven innings with a .136 opponent batting average. Rucinski did not allow a run to share the league lead with a 0.00 ERA for the week. For the season, Rucinski has an era of 1.77 and 21 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings pitched. Game 1: Liberty 13 Coastal Carolina 1
DANVILLE, Va. – Liberty freshman starter Stephen Evans limited No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina to three hits and the No. 2 seed Flames pounded out 13 runs and 14 hits in a 13-1 win over the Chanticleers in Game 10 of the 2008 Royal Purple Big South Conference Baseball Championship, forcing a necessary Game 11 to determine the Big South Tournament champion. DANVILLE, Va. – Flames starter Dustin Umberger tossed a complete game and struck out 10 to lead No. 2 Liberty past No. 6 Radford, 11-2 in Game 7 of the 2008 Royal Purple Big South Conference Baseball Championship, May 23 at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville, Va. With the victory, Liberty improves to 33-25-1 and advances to play the loser of No. 1 Coastal Carolina-No. 4 Winthrop Friday night at 7:00pm for a chance to earn a berth in Saturday’s Championship game. Radford, which defeated Liberty 15-4 in their first tournament meeting on Wednesday, is eliminated with the loss and ends its season at 24-32. Read the rest of this entry »
