College Baseball coaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara, including Northridge Head Coach Steve Rousey, convened at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim Saturday morning to show off their skills and creativity.

Their tools of choice however were not a glove, a baseball, or a bat but a skillet, a spatula, and a number of ingredients at their disposal as participants in the inaugural Baseball Cooking Challenge.

Receiving 78 points and seven first-place votes, Cal State Fullerton was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2009 Big West Conference crown, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 10 league titles and a conference-best 14 overall. UC Irvine was selected to finish second with 67 points and UC Santa Barbara was picked third after receiving 65 points and one first-place nod.

MALIBU, Calif. – Junior transfer Colin Rooney’s (Yorba Linda, Calif./Saddleback College) eighth-inning, three-run homer was the key shot in Pepperdine’s 14-3 victory over Long Beach State Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Denny Duron's arm and bat were key in Pepperdine's 8-8 tie in an exhibition with Long Beach State.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Pepperdine shortstop Denny Duron gunned down Long Beach State’s Brennan Metzger at home plate by for the final out of Saturday’s 8-8 tie between the Waves and Dirtbags at Blair Field.

Long Beach had already scored twice in its half of the ninth when Duron (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) scooped a ball hit up the middle by Jonathan Jones. Realizing he had no chance to catch the speedy centerfielder, the senior wheeled around and fired a bullet to rookie catcher Nathan Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS), who applied the tag on Metzger. David Price from Vanderbilt celebrates ALCS victory

Most of my readers know that I am a diehard Red Sox fan but we have to congratulate to the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays after they both advance to the 2008 World Series. The Rays ended up making the series on the arm of David Price who was the number 1 pick in the 2007 MLB draft after a standout career with the Vanderbilt Commodores. He ended up getting the final four outs in Game 7 of the ALCS protecting a two run lead. They also featured 2006 number 3 overall pick, 2005 Cape Cod League MVP, and 2006 Big West Player of the Year Evan Longoria from Long Beach State. He has played in all eleven games of the playoffs with a .262 average, six homers, and eleven RBI. Read the rest of this entry »

The Long Beach Press Telegram writer Bob Keisser has written an article previewing the 15 new faces around the Long Beach State program in 2009 and a potential lineup. The biggest name in the group is former Miami (FL) corner infielder Joey Terdoslavich who will be sitting out the 2009 season due to the new transfer rules. Andrew Gagnon who was selected in the 10th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates turned down a sizable bonus to play for the Dirtbags. He went 8-3 with a 1.58 ERA with Liberty High School in California. Former University of Memphis pitcher Brandon Rowan has joined the Pitt baseball coaching staff announced head coach Joe Jordano. Rowan, who most recently held the head coaching position at Crichton College in Memphis, Tenn., joins the Panthers’ staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

“I am very pleased to have a coach of Brandon Rowan’s character and experience join our staff,” said head coach Jordano.

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State’s celebration of the 2008 NCAA baseball title will continue well into the fall.

President George Bush has invited the Bulldogs to come to the White House, school officials were notified late Monday. The team will meet with the President sometime between 1 and 4 p.m. Nov. 12.

The visit is part of a program to honor NCAA spring sports national champions. The Bulldogs were the first championship team offered an invitation. White House officials said President Bush, who is a baseball fan and former owner of the Texas Rangers, was excited about Fresno State’s “Underdogs to Wonderdogs” story.

Brian MatuszThe 2-seed San Diego Toreros bounced top seed and regional host Long Beach State 5-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Toreros got on the board in the first inning and again in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Dirtbags answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Torero lead in half at 2-1. Neither team would score until the top of the ninth inning when the Toreros iced the game scoring three more runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Dirtbags went down in order in the bottom of the ninth and saw their season come to a close.

San Diego will now face 4-seed Fresno State in the regional championship game at 5:00 p.m. PDT. Fresno State defeated San Diego 6-0 last night.

Fresno StateGAME ONE – #1 LONG BEACH STATE VS. #3 CALIFORNIA
Top seed Long Beach State bounced back from their opening round loss to 4-seed Fresno State and eliminated 2-seed Cal winning 9-2. The Dirtbags scored in four straight innings starting in the second inning. Long Beach State scored one in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fith to take a 7-2 lead. The Dirtbags added two more in the top of the eighth to take a 9-2 lead. Cal was unable anything together in the final two innings and saw their season come to a close.

Brett Lorin picks up the win for the Dirtbags going five innings giving up the only two runs scored by Cal. Craig Bennigson took the loss for the Golden Bears going three innings giving up two runs.
