NEC Preseason Favorite Monmouth eyes fourth- ever league crown

Somerset, NJ — Monmouth won five first-place votes to find itself in its familiar position atop the Northeast Conference baseball preseason poll. The Hawks have earned the moniker of NEC preseason favorite in three of the past four years. Central Connecticut State collected two first-place nods to finish second in the vote by the conference’s eight head coaches followed by Wagner which garnered the remaining first-place vote in third. The league office released the annual rankings on Thursday as a prelude to its 23rd season of Division I baseball.

Head Coach Don Maines

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Long Island University head baseball coach Don Maines announced the 2008 schedule today, with 54 games on the docket. The Blackbirds will kick off the season with a three-game series at Virginia Commonwealth beginning on Feb. 27. Long Island’s schedule also features a trip to the 2009 Palm Beach Challenge.

Gotham Baseball has put out their Players of the Week and Weekend Recap. They have given the Beast of the Week to Jack Murphy of Princeton for going 16-30 with nine RBI for last week. The College of New Jersey pitcher Mike Oliver was named the pitcher of the week after striking out an amassing 16 batters in a seven inning game. Florida Gulf Coast 5 South Florida 4

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team fell, 5-4, Tuesday night to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Red McEwen Field.

The Bulls’ record drops to 3-4, while the Eagles improve to 8-1.

USF’s offensive attack came in the first two innings after falling behind by two after the top of the first. Redshirt freshman Ryan Lockwood spearheaded the Bulls’ offensive charge with a lead-off walk. Junior counterparts Brandon Smith and Addison Maruszak followed with a walk and a hit by pitch to fill the bases.
