NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana-Lafayette’s Greg Fontenot and Zach Osborne are the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as voted on by the league’s member institutions.
Fontenot, a local Lafayette product, put an impressive week as the Cajuns rolled to four-straight wins, including a series sweep of conference foe Middle Tennessee. The sophomore was instrumental in ULL’s victories, helping on both sides of the ball with his errorless performance at shortstop and his .583 batting average. Read the rest of this entry »

NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana-Lafayette’s Les Smith and South Alabama’s Matt Jackson have been named the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as decided on by the league’s member institutions. The award marks the second this season for Jackson, as the Jaguars ace also earned the award the first week of the season, Feb. 23.

#9 LSU 2 Northwestern State 1
Sophomore Micah Gibbs drove in the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead No. 5 LSU past Northwestern State, 2-1, Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.
Coming in to pinch hit for first baseman Buzzy Haydel with one out and the bases loaded, Gibbs drilled a 2-2 offering into the gap in right center field to break open a 1-1 tie and bring senior Derek Helenihi home for the victory.

Share ULL upsets LSU on Wednesday
Louisiana-Lafayette and Wofford both picked up huge non-conference victories on Wednesday evening. The Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette picked up their victory over the third ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. The Cajuns had a 9-3 lead after the fifth inning but the LSU Tigers made a great comeback to tie the game at 9 after eight innings. Scott Hawkins of Louisiana-Lafayette ended up leading off the ninth with a home run to left field to grab back the lead at 10-9. They were able to hold on for the victory. Wofford picked up a 16-8 victory over the 28th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Wofford had 17 hits in the ballgame while being led by Kyle Behrendt who had three hits and five RBI. Share Weekend Winners: Middle Tennessee State was the big weekend winner, as they swept a three game home series with Missouri State. Also posting impressive weekends were UALR, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Troy, and Western Kentucky. UALR took two of three games at home against Northern Iowa, and just missed a sweep with a one run loss on Saturday. Florida Atlantic finished the weekend with a 2-1 series record against Fordham. Florida International posted a 20 run Saturday in route to a two games to one series victory over Jacksonville. Louisiana-Monroe hosted the ULM and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record. New Orleans won the first three games of their home series against Towson before losing the Sunday finale to open the season 3-1. Troy lost a Friday contest against Kentucky in the Caravelle Resort Invitational before winning their next three games to end the tournament at a very solid 3-1. Western Kentucky took a single game from Toledo on Friday night, but the Saturday and Sunday meetings were canceled due to inclement weather. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas A&M 8 Wright State 5
Sophomores Caleb Shofner and Brooks Raley had four hits each on Sunday afternoon as No. 1 Texas A&M rallied for an 8-5 win over Wright State and a series sweep before 3,207 fans at Olsen Field.

I was able to get away from work and make it out to Disch Falk Field by the 2nd inning. It was a great Friday Afternoon to take in a game of baseball. Texas open the game with Sophomore Chance Ruffin and UI-C counter with junior left-hander Chris Kovacevich.
The Longhorns manufactured one run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Travis Tucker led off the frame with a single through the right side of the infield. A sacrifice bunt by Brandon Loy and a wild pitch pushed Tucker to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Belt.

NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. LAFAYETTE – The Black team won in Game 5 of the Red-Black Fall World Series on Monday night by a decisive score of 7-1, taking the title as well as earning a steak dinner on Sunday. This marks the second year in a row Black has won.
The Red team gave the Black team plenty of opportunities, posting four errors, all of which were directly involved in scoring plays or opportunities. The Black team posted one run innings in the first, second, fourth, and eighth, and had their most success in the fifth with three runs.

Louisiana-Lafayette Baseball Schedule For 2009 is Set
A season-opening, four-game series at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field with Nebraska, 26 total home games and meetings with nine teams which qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament highlight Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team’s 2009 schedule which was announced Thursday by head coach Tony Robichaux.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will play 21 games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season. Included are midweek matchups with LSU and Rice, participants in the 2008 World Series, and three-game road series at Southern Mississippi and East Carolina.
