Among the First Team honorees are six players participating in this year’s College World Series including Arizona State starting pitcher Mike Leake, LSU starting pitcher Louis Coleman, Arizona State catcher Carlos Ramirez, UNC first baseman Dustin Ackley, ASU outfielder Jason Kipnis and Virginia utility player Danny Hultzen. SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament and clinched its first ever West Coast Conference Title with a 14-3 WCC Championship Series clinching victory over Loyola Marymount University Saturday afternoon. The Zags will be making their fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament and the first since 1981. That year was also the last time a Gonzaga team won a conference title (Nor-Pac Conference). I will check in throughout the season with my thoughts on some recent news and notes in College Baseball.

The biggest news on Tuesday was Arizona State dropping a tough road game against Arkansas 7-3 in Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks are now 23-6 while being 10-2 in the SEC. I know some people have questions on the Razorbacks early season schedule but they are 10-2 in the SEC with road series victories over South Carolina and Auburn. Read the rest of this entry »

College Baseball coaches from San Diego to Santa Barbara, including Northridge Head Coach Steve Rousey, convened at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim Saturday morning to show off their skills and creativity.

Their tools of choice however were not a glove, a baseball, or a bat but a skillet, a spatula, and a number of ingredients at their disposal as participants in the inaugural Baseball Cooking Challenge.

Santa ClaraSAN BRUNO, CA – San Diego and Pepperdine were picked as favorites to win this year’s WCC regular season title in the 2009 preseason baseball poll, as voted on by the head coaches in the conference. The Toreros and Waves have already been receiving several preseason accolades by several publications as San Diego has been ranked as high as No. 11 by Baseball America, while Pepperdine was ranked No. 17 in the same poll. San Diego and Pepperdine both received 45 points, with the Toreros receiving four first place votes to three for the Waves. Santa Clara, which has received votes in several preseason publications, was picked to finish third with 35 points. Gonzaga received the last remaining first place vote, and received 30 points, to come in at fourth place, edging out San Francisco, which received 26 points, for fifth place. Rounding out this year’s poll are Loyola Marymount, with 20 points, Saint Mary’s, with 14 points, and Portland, with nine points.

Some schools will send out a press releases when they have everybody signed and some will send out multiple releases when they have received the LOIs. Today that is what I will be working on. South Carolina Baseball Announces 2008 Signing Class

The University of South Carolina baseball program has announced the signing of 12 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the November early signing period. The class includes five players from the South Carolina Diamond Devils AAU squad that won a pair of national championships this summer as well as the top rated high school players out of the states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia. It consists of 10 high school players as well as two junior college standouts.
