Former Lion Jeff Walker returns to LMU as an assistant coach.

Former Lion Jeff Walker returns to LMU as an assistant coach.

FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE

Former Lion Jeff Walker, who was an All-WCC selection for LMU in 2000, will return to the bluff for his first season as an assistant coach under head coach Jason Gill, it was announced earlier this week. Coach Walker will work primarily with the outfielders and hitters, as well as assist in strength and conditioning and recruiting.

Prior to coming to Loyola Marymount, Walker spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif. During this time, Ohlone qualified for the State Playoffs, led the state in stolen bases, and was one of the best hitting teams in the California. Before going to Ohlone, Walker spent five years serving as both the Athletics Director and head varsity baseball coach at Saratoga High School in Saratoga, Calif. In just his first year as head coach, Walker guided Saratoga, which had finished the previous season in last place after winning just six games all year, to the CIF/Central Coast Section Playoffs.

Jason Gill

Jason Gill

FROM CBB NEWS SOURCES

Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak formally announced on Thursday that Jason Gill has been named head coach of the LMU baseball program. After serving as an assistant coach at LMU in 1999 and 2000, Gill, who has spent the last four years working under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, will return to the bluff to become the seventh head coach of the Lions’ program.

“I’m excited to make my return to LMU, a program that has always held a special place in my heart,” Gill said.  “The people in and around the Lion family have always been supportive, and I look forward to re-joining that group as the head baseball coach.  I believe in the direction that Dr. Husak is taking the program and the Athletic Department, and I feel that LMU as a whole is structured and ready to win from top to bottom.  Upon reflecting on my personal experiences at the university, and talking to current and former coaches, it is extremely clear that LMU is destined for great things.  The bottom line is it is a great time to be a Lion.”

The College Baseball Blog made the long trek down to Chatham to take in the Cape Cod All-Star game. The East Division in front of 8,629 fans used a seven run bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 6-1 deficit and pick up a 8-6 victory in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game. The game was dominated by the team’s respective pitching staffs with each squad having a pitcher blow up in an inning. The Western squad scored the first run of the game in the 3rd inning with an A.J. Pollock (Notre Dame) opposite field homer while Rob Poythress (Georgia) returned the favor in the fifth inning by hitting a ball back in the same general area in right field. Both homers were just pop flys to right field but the strong wind heading out to right field brought the ball out of the ball park. Read the rest of this entry »

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior first baseman Jose Valerio goes yard twice as the ninth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team cruised their way to a 11-3 win over Loyola Marymount University Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 35-11 overall, move to 13-3 in the WCC, complete a three-game sweep over the Lions and extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 16 games. With the loss, the Lions fall to 20-23 overall and 5-10 in the WCC.

The Toreros got on the scoreboards first as they scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Logan Gelbrich led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a Victor Sanchez single to centerfield. After Kevin Hansen walked to load the bases, Jose Valerio then hit his first collegiate grand slam over the fight field fence to give USD a 4-0 lead with no outs. Ryan Davis then kept things rolling with a single through the right side and moved to second on a Kevin Muno sacrifice bunt. James Meador then drove in Davis with a run-scoring double to left field and the final USD run of the inning came on a Josh Romanski RBI single through the right side to give USD a 6-0 advantage.
