WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Maine starting pitcher Joe Miller pitched 8.0 strong innings and the Black Bears capitalized on Ohio State miscues to score an 8-7 victory over the Buckeyes at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The win stopped a three-game losing streak for Maine and extended an Ohio State streak to three consecutive defeats. Maine is now 5-6 on the year and the Buckeyes are 4-4.

Miller picked up the win to go 2-0 on the season. He gave up six runs, four of them earned, but got enough help at the plate from his teammates to gain the win. Read the rest of this entry »

CSTV contributor Eric Sorenson checks in with two conferences previews in the Atlantic 10 and America East. In the Atlantic 10, he lists Charlotte as the clear favorite with Richmond, Fordham, and St. Bonaventure as contenders. His darkhorse in the conference is Xavier. The full A-10 preview is available here. In America East, Eric can not decided on any clear favorite listing Albany, Binghamton, Maine and Stony Brook as contenders for the conference championship. The CBB continues our series of previews of different conferences throughout the nation. This week we check in on the America East conference which had Binghamton win the Regular Season title and Albany won the conference tournament in a classic 1-0 pitching duel. Albany was put into the Arkansas regional where they lost to Arkansas 9-0 and Creighton 21-11. The conference tournament will be double elimination at the number 1 seed’s home field. The University of Maine has released their 2008 schedule. The Black Bears will open the season on February 23rd when they play a doubleheader against Delaware State. The Black Bears have a difficult schedule in 2008 with games against ACC power Miami, UNLV and Ivy League finalist Penn. They will play a full America East schedule with Albany, Stony Brook, and Hartford heading up to Orono for conference series. Maine will head on the road with conference series at UMBC, Binghamton, and Vermont. The full schedule is available here.

The Maine Black Bears have announced that they will play a pair of games against the Academy of Baseball Canada and Team Ontario the next two weekends. On September 21st they will host Baseball Canada at 5 pm and then will take them on the next day at 5 pm or at the conclusion of the Umass-Maine football game. They will play Team Ontario September 29th and 30th at 2:30 to round out the fall schedule. The full release is available here.

The Marist baseball program will welcome eight new players for the 2008 season including three transfers. Chris Wojick from Maine, B.J. Martin from St. John’s, and Zach Starkey from Wabash Valley College will join five freshman in the Red Fox program. The full release is available here.

According to multiple sources, The University of Maine has picked up four transfers for the 2008 season. Joe Mercurio is coming from Illinois where he was the backup to All-American catcher Lars Davis. Mercurio was only able to get into eleven games while only starting three games. (The Baseball Zealot has more on Mercurio.) The Black Bears also picked up High Point University right-hander Joe Miller. he pitched in only six games in 2007 while making one start with no record and a 8.31 ERA. The other two players are Greg Doogan and Tony Patane who played with UConn-Avery Point in 2007. Doogan is a 6′5 230 pound right-hander while Patane is a 6′0 shortstop from New Milford CT. It should be interesting to see how this Maine program does under second year head coach Steve Trimper who led the program to a disappointing 22-31 record in his first year.
