MikeCole ORONO, Maine – University of Maine baseball coach Steve Trimper announced today that Mike Cole has been named an assistant coach of the Black Bears. Cole comes to Maine after spending the past season as an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Vermont.

"Mike is a wonderful addition to our staff," said Trimper. "It’s great to be reunited with him once again. Known as a tireless recruiter and teacher, he will be a tremendous asset to our infielders and hitters."

The Bangor Daily News has an excellent article on former Maine coach John Winkin who took the Black Bears to the College World Series six times with the most recent appearance in 1986. He also coached at Colby College of Waterville ME and Husson College of Bangor ME during his 53 year career from 1954-2007. He was able to accumlate over 1,000 victories combined with the three schools. He finished his coaching career in 2007 when he suffered a stroke on his daily walk in Bangor. Here are some of the most interesting articles from around the nation for March 11th.

The first article is about FSU football player D’Vontrey Richardson is giving College Baseball another try after taking last season off from the FSU baseball program. The next article is about URI baseball coach Jim Foster raising $54,000 for new batting cages and other things for his baseball program by giving away season tickets for the Boston Red Sox. The next article is about Orange Coast College baseball player Trevor McDonald has been hospitalized with a flesh eating virus for the last two weeks. Tyler Cleveland of the student paper of Southern Miss talks with Corky Palmer after Southern Miss was manhandled over the weekend by Cal-State Fullerton. The next interesting article talks about the major upset of the Netherlands over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Curt Smith who was an All-American at Maine a couple of years ago had a key part in the 11th inning come back. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— Last year’s regular season champion, Binghamton University, barely edged out the defending tournament champion, Stony Brook University, to claim the top spot in the 2009 America East Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bearcats received four of a possible six votes and garnered 34 points, while the Seawolves claimed the remaining three votes and finished with 33 points. The Portland (ME) Press Herald has an excellent article about the Maine Black Bears pitching staff in 2009. The Black Bears are expected to put three freshmen into the rotation this season led by Keith Bilodeau from Bourne MA. The Bears open up the 2009 season with a visit to UNLV on Feb. 20th. Golden Eagles Begin Fall Practice

The Oral Roberts University baseball team has begun fall practice in preparation for the 2009 season, where the Golden Eagles look to claim their 12th consecutive conference championship.

ORU’s fall practice runs through mid-October, with intrasquad scrimmages at J.L. Johnson Stadium held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The scrimmages are free and open to the public.

Longhorns announce fall Baseball schedule

Texas hosts games against Rice (10/19) and Texas State (11/02) and travels to Baylor (10/12) and Rice (10/26).

he Texas Longhorns will play four fall baseball games this season, including a pair at The Dell Diamond in nearby Round Rock, the team announced on Thursday.

The Longhorns host Rice on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1:30 p.m. and Texas State on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m.

Coach Ed Flaherty has become a regional legend and an NACB Hall of Famer in his 22 years as Head Coach of Southern Maine.  With a career record of 689 and 301 (.695 winning percentage), Coach Flaherty figures to cross into rarefied air with the potential to win his 700th game for the Huskies in 2009.  The Huskies will also be going for their third national DIII title in 2009 after falling short in the Northeast Regional against the Trinity (CT) juggernaut this past spring.  Coach Flaherty graduated from Maine, where he played baseball.  He was inducted into the University of Maine Hall of Fame in 1992, the State of Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993 and the National Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005.

Last week we talked Southern Maine with Coach Flaherty. (Part 1 available here.)  He’s been kind enough to sit down with us for some more questions.

Mahaney Field

Construction began today to install turf on the University of Maine’s Mahaney Diamond. A similar infill field turf that was placed on Morse Field and Mahaney Dome will be installed. Sargent Corporation is currently doing earthwork to prepare the surface for Northeast Turf. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

FROM OHIO STATE PRESS RELEASE
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Maine starting pitcher Joe Miller pitched 8.0 strong innings and the Black Bears capitalized on Ohio State miscues to score an 8-7 victory over the Buckeyes at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The win stopped a three-game losing streak for Maine and extended an Ohio State streak to three consecutive defeats. Maine is now 5-6 on the year and the Buckeyes are 4-4.

Miller picked up the win to go 2-0 on the season. He gave up six runs, four of them earned, but got enough help at the plate from his teammates to gain the win. Read the rest of this entry »
