It was quite a weekend for the Rice Owls at the Houston College Classic. Faced with the daunting task of facing three consecutive top 10 teams, the Blue & Gray delivered in a big way. On Friday night, the Owls pitching staff combined to set a Houston College Classic record with 17 strikeouts (11 by Mike Ojala) in a thrilling 5-4 victory in 10 innings over No. 9 UCLA. On Saturday night, Ryan Berry turned in as masterful performance as you’ll see in college baseball, throwing a complete-game, two-hit shutout while striking out 12 and walking none. It was C-USA’s first victory over a top-ranked team since Houston defeated LSU on March 6, 2004. Rice closed out the weekend with a solid 8-3 victory over No. 6 Baylor. Read the rest of this entry »

Share I will be covering the ACC in depth this season with weekly previews of the weekend ahead. I believe that the ACC is one of the premier conferences in the country even though no team in the conference has won the national championship since 1955 when Wake Forest grabbed the title. The ACC is expected to be won by the North Carolina Tar Heels who are led by two of the best pitchers in the conference with Alex White and Matt Harvey. The North Carolina offense is led by junior Dustin Ackley who has been one of the best hitters in the country for the last two seasons. Read the rest of this entry »

With the winningest season in program history just a few short months in the rearview mirror, the Marshall Thundering Herd baseball team embarks on a journey that could see the squad make further strides in the 2009 season. In 2008, Marshall finished 30-30-1, earned a berth in the Conference USA championship game and lost by one run to Houston, and finished the historic campaign one win shy of obtaining its first appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament since 1978. In 2009, the Herd will look to settle its unfinished business… Read the rest of this entry »

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball program recently signed six players to National Letters of Intent and added a pair of walk-ons to the roster for the 2010 season.
“With the losses of Lape, Yeager and Casamassima, we knew we had to be athletic,” Thundering Herd head coach Jeff Waggoner stated. “All six signees are 6.9 runners or better, which brings us some added speed to next year’s team. The class also provides added left-handed hitting to offset Conference USA bullpens which has been a problem in our first two seasons.”

Kentucky 9 Marshall 6
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sawyer Carroll’s five-RBI performance boosted the No. 16 Kentucky baseball team to a nine-run rally, soaring from a 6-0 deficit and notching a 9-6 win over the red-hot Marshall Thundering Herd – its 23rd non-conference win in the past 24 games – on Wednesday evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
After starting every game of his college career – a span of 98 consecutive games – Carroll was scratched from the starting lineup in order to take a final exam, in Italian. Carroll, a National Player of the Year award candidate, completed his final exam around 7 p.m. ET as Kentucky made it through the first 1 ½ innings. By 7:15 p.m., Carroll was standing in the batters box as a pinch hitter, finishing the night 1-for-3 with a career-high five RBI. On the year Carroll, who leads the Southeastern Conference with a .431 average, has totaled 63 RBI in just 45 games, good for a tie for fifth place all-time on the single-season UK record books. A year ago, Carroll finished with 56 RBI in UK’s 54 games. Read the rest of this entry »
