Another late comeback attempt by the Marshals on Wednesday was averted by the Copperheads for the second consecutive night, allowing Coppell (19-19) to beat McKinney (21-16) 8-6 and move to within 2 and 1/2 games of the TCL lead.

Coppell held an 8-1 lead going into the 8th inning, but McKinney was able to put up two in that inning and three more in the 9th, but it was still not enough.

McKinney starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (Alabama) earned the loss pitching into the fifth inning but allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

McKinney’s defense was subpar on the evening as only three of the eight Coppell runs were earned. Errors by Jake Smith (Alabama), Nick Schwaner (New Orleans) and J.B. Brown (Pacific) were all costly.

McKinney, TX (July 20, 2008) –

The Brazos Valley Bombers fell to the McKinney Marshals 5-1 today in a game full of frustrations. The Bombers struggled to get on base all afternoon against the Marshals’ trio of pitchers, Joey Centanni, Hunter Hill and Adam Scott and only managed three hits.

With Chad Colbert at the plate, Nelson stole second and advanced to third as shortstop J.B. Brown mishandled the throw. Zach Grichor came to the plate next and grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Nelson to put the Bombers in the lead.

It was the kind of hard-fought, nail-biting pitching duel that baseball purists refer to as a classic.

Of course, when you find yourself on the short end of a classic, you have a different word for it… like heartbreaker.

The East Texas Pump Jacks dropped a 1-0 decision to the McKinney Marshals Thursday night in McKinney. The game slipped away when the Marshals posted an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The loss marred the spectacular debut of James Alvarado, a new addition to the Pump Jacks pitching staff. A sophomore out of Howard College, Alvarado was joining his new teammates for the very first time Thursday night.

When Yogi Berra famously stated, “It ain’t over til it’s over,” he wasn’t speaking specifically about the East Texas Pump Jacks.

But he may as well have been.

The Pump Jacks staged another comeback to steal a victory from the visiting McKinney Marshals, 3-2, at Driller Park on Fireworks Friday.

The winning rally began with the Jacks down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth. Down 2-1, J.D. Dunn dropped a ball into right-center field that he stretched into a double. Garrett Smith followed with a grounder to third that elicited an errant throw from McKinney third baseman Mike Walker. The wild throw allowed Dunn to score the tying run and left Smith on second base.

The East Texas Pump Jacks sport the Texas Collegiate League’s highest-scoring offense and best home-field record – and both were on display Sunday night.

The Pump Jacks defeated the McKinney Marshals, 7-1, at Driller Park, moving back to within four games of the first-place Marshals. The Jacks moved back into a tie for second place with the Brazos Valley Bombers and Coppell Copperheads.

East Texas benefited from a strong outing by Pat McCrory, who made his way back from an illness earlier this week to give up just one run over eight innings pitched. McCrory (2-1) scattered seven hits and walked five while striking out six. It was the second longest outing of the season for a Pump Jacks starter, topped only by Scott Copeland’s complete-game win over the Bombers Friday night.

There is already rumblings from the teams that 7 teams will not return next year unless changes are made. The 7 teams that have said that they will not return are Denton Outlaws, Duncanville Deputies, Coppell Copperheads, Colleyville LoneStars, Wichita Falls Roughnecks, Mineral Wells Steam and Weatherford Wranglers. The two that have said that they will return are Brazos Valley Bombers and the Mckinney Marshals. That is a shame as the state of Texas needs a Summer Collegiate League to continue promoting high quality College baseball. I have personally attended games in the DFW area and it has always been a blast. It is a more intimate settings and the Boys of Summer are always more than receptive in talking to the younger fans. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak in TCL playoff games for McKinney. The Marshals are now 3-1 in the 2007 playoffs after running the table to go 5-0 en route to the 2006 championship.
