CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – No. 29 Texas State will be the top seed in the 2009 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament when it begins Wednesday at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Bobcats claimed their third regular-season championship and their first outright title last weekend after finishing the regular season with a 38-14 overall record and 24-7 mark in conference play.

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year by a vote of league coaches and sports information directors, the Southland Conference office announced Monday in conjunction with the release of its all-conference teams.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Matt Otteman had a career night hitting a grand slam and a three run homer to finish with a career-high seven RBI in UT Arlington’s 14-6 victory over No. 25 Texas State on Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington. Eight Mavericks finished with multi-hit games and senior Andy Sauter pitched 3.2 innings in relief to win his fourth game of the season. UT Arlington improves to 29-24 overall and to 19-13 in the SLC while Texas State had its six-game SLC win streak snapped and falls to 38-14 overall and to 24-7 in league play.

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State clinched its third regular-season Southland Conference baseball championship last weekend and its 4-0 week, which included a road win at No. 2 Rice and a sweep of Nicholls State, has the Bobcats ranked 25th this week by Collegiate Baseball.
The Bobcats will be the No. 1 seed in the 2009 Southland Conference Baseball Championship, which will be played May 20-23 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. The other seven spots in the tournament have been field, but seeding has yet to be determined entering the final week of the regular season, which has teams scheduled to play Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

SAN MARCOS – Brian Borski gave a quality eight-inning performance on the mound and Tyler Sibley went 4-for-5 and scored two runs to aid the Texas State Bobcats in a 10-2 win over the Nicholls Colonels Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats improve to 36-12 overall and 22-6 in Southland Conference action, while the Colonels drop to 18-30 and 8-21, respectively.

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lamar hit three home runs and had eight extra-base hits to defeat McNeese State 13-5 at Cowboy Diamond on Sunday to become the third team to secure a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
Andy Mena was one of four players to finish with three hits, including his second home run of the season, drove in three and scored twice.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Central Arkansas baseball team put away Texas A&M-Corpus Christi early with a 20-6, seven-inning victory at Chapman Field on Sunday afternoon. The Bears, after blowing leads in the first two games of the series, scored in every inning and posted a season-best 20 hits. UCA improves their record to 18-23 overall and 9-15 in Southland play, while the Islanders fall to 16-29 and 8-16.
