SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An eighth inning solo shot from Michael Langley and a two-run ninth-inning homer from Steven Karwatt helped lift Mercer to a rubber game 10-7 win over the USC Upstate baseball team after Upstate fought back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh.

MACON, Ga. – In each of its first three years in the Atlantic Sun, Kennesaw State has improved its standing and on the heels of its runner-up finish in 2008, the A-Sun coaches have installed the Owls as the preseason favorite, the conference office announced on Thursday.

Led by the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Kyle Heckathorn, the Owls received six of the 11 first-place votes outdistancing themselves from a bunched pack of Lipscomb, the 2008 conference champion, FGCU, the 2008 regular-season champion and Stetson. MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team announced its 2009 spring schedule on Friday, featuring matchups with schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, including eight games against teams that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Baseball Championship.

“We have another tough schedule in 2009,” Mercer head coach Craig Gibson said. “We face a number of schools that reached the postseason a year ago in addition to non-conference foes from the SEC and ACC. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 2 North Carolina pounded out a season-high 22 hits and had five pitchers combine on a four-hit shutout in a 17-0 win over Charlotte Tuesday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. ATLANTA, Ga. — Junior outfielder Charlie Blackmon drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 8th as part of a 4-RBI evening to lead the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to a 7-6 victory over the Mercer Bears. Freshman Jeff Rowland added two hits, and closer Chris Hicks earned his 6th save of the season.

CSTV continues their series of articles with two conference previews and Doug Kroll checking in on the coaching carousel. Eric Sorensen previews the ACC which he lists North Carolina, UVA, and Miami as favorites. He lists FSU, Clemson, and Georgia Tech as contenders. He puts Wake Forest as the darkhouse. MACON, Ga. – Stetson is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Atlantic Sun Conference baseball champion in 2008 in the league’s preseason poll. The Hatters garnered eight of 12 first place votes in the poll conducted among the conference’s head coaches. Hatter outfielder Justin Bass and Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph split preseason Player of the Year honors, while Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers claimed Pitcher of the Year honors. The final game of the Miami-Mercer series was canceled due to rain in the area. Mercer took Game one 6-5 and Game two 8-5. Mercer is back in action next weekend at Bethune-Cookman while Miami tries to get win number 1 against UCLA.

The Mercer Bears took Game 2 of their three game set with Miami on Saturday by a score of 8-5. This was the Bears second consecutive win over the Canes since they won on Friday evening by a score of 6-5. Mike Armstrong and Billy Shaughnessy each hit a home run and drove in three runs to lead the Mercer offense. Cory Gearrin finished off the game by pitching a perfect ninth inning to get his second save in as many nights. The Miami team needs to wake up since most of the early season games are to build up the Hurricanes record for a possible NCAA Tourney bid.

The Mercer Bears made a dramatic ninth inning comeback to knock off the Hurricanes in Game 1 of the three game set. Catcher, Josh Thompson lead the Bears with a 4-4 performance with 3 RBI’s and a home run. The Hurricanes were unable to hold a 5-1 advantage behind a solid start from Manny Miguelez who went five innings allowing only one run. Mercer starter Brantley New struggled through five innings while giving up five earned runs. The teams continue the season on Saturday at 7 pm.
