Aaron Fitt of Baseball America has put out his predictions for the 2009 College World Series. He expects two teams from the ACC in Miami (FL) and North Carolina to make it back to Omaha after strong 2008 campaigns. He has three teams from the West Coast to make it to the College World Series in Cal-State Fullerton, Oregon State, and the University of San Diego. OMAHA, Neb. – After allowing two hits to the first two hitters of the game, Stanford pitchers did not allow another hit until the sixth inning and the Cardinal picked up an 8-3 victory over Miami (Fla.) in an elimination game Tuesday at the Men’s College World Series.

Stanford (41-23-2) advances to play Georgia Friday at 1 p.m. The Miami season ends at 53-11 and marks the ninth-straight year that the top overall national seed will not win the national championship. Read the rest of this entry »

Here is your recap of Day 3 in the College World Series. We saw in the losers bracket where the Miami (FL) Hurricanes beating FSU 7-5 eliminating the Noles from the tournament. In the winner’s bracket matchup, Georgia knocked off Stanford 4-3 behind a two run seventh inning to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Stanford and Miami will face off on Wednesday at 7 pm EDT.

The Florida State Seminoles lost today to the University of Miami (FL) 7-5 to end the FSU season without a National Title. Earlier this season, FSU and Miami (FL) had a bench clearing incident at the end of the ACC series. The incident started when the Seminoles showed poor sportsmanship by not coming out at the end of the game which caused a reaction from the UM players to get the FSU players out. (Full Article about incident available here.) Today, both teams came out of the dugout with the FSU players and UM players shaking hands without incident. Miami (FL) head coach Jim Morris and his assistants were standing at home plate waiting for Mike Martin Sr and his staff to come out of the dugout but it never happened. Jemile Weeks hit his second home run of the College World Series, closer Carlos Gutierrez worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the ninth inning and Miami held off Florida State 7-5 in a Bracket 1 elimination game on Monday.

Georgia used a four run ninth inning to rally past the top overall seed in the College World Series 7-4 on Saturday. Miami headed into the top of the ninth with a 4-3 lead over 8-seed Georgia but two errors by Miami closer Carlos Gutierrez allowed the Bulldogs to score the upset over the Hurricanes.

Miami got on the board first in the bottomof the first inning on a solo home run by Jemile Weeks. Georgia tied the game in the top of the third inning on a single by Ryan Peisel but Miami came right back and retook the lead on a two run homer by Ryan Tekotte.

The Miami (FL) Hurricanes will be making their 23rd College World Series appearance and 11th under head coach Jim Morris. The Hurricanes enter Omaha with a 52-9 overall record after taking the final two games of the Super Regional against the Arizona Wildcats (6-3 L, 14-10 W, 4-2 W). Lubbock, Texas - As eight teams load up and head to Omaha to continue the quest for the College Baseball National Championship, eight players are named as semi-finalists for the Brooks Wallace National Player of Year Award. CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Four different players hit home runs as top-ranked Miami beat Arizona 14-10 and evened their Super Regional series Saturday night.

Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal each hit three-run homers and Mark Sobolewski hit a go-ahead solo home run as the Hurricanes (51-9) rallied from an early four-run deficit. Jason Hagerty also homered for Miami.

Sobolewski’s leadoff homer off Arizona reliever Mike Colla (4-3) in the sixth put Miami ahead 8-7. Grandal’s shot later in the inning extended the Hurricanes’ lead 11-7. Read the rest of this entry »

Arizona 6 Miami(FL) 3 in 11 Innings

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Jon Gaston hit a three-run home run in the top of the 11th as No. 12 Arizona defeated No. 1 Miami 6-3 in the opening game of their Super Regional Friday night.

Gaston, a seventh-round draft choice by the Houston Astros earlier Friday, drove Miami reliever Carlos Gutierrez’s 1-1 pitch over the fence in right field for his 12th home run of the season.

Gutierrez (5-3) struck out the first two hitters in the 11th but hit Colt Sedbrook on an 0-2 pitch. Brad Glenn followed with a single before Gaston’s game-winning shot.

Jason Stoffel (4-2) pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five for the win.

Game two of the best of three series will be Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and televised on ESPN.

The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 41-17 record and a 12-12 record in the highly competitive PAC-10 conference. The Hurricanes have a 50-8 record while going 23-5 in the ACC. HOUSTON — Aaron Crow of Missouri, Joshua Fields of Georgia, Chris Hernandez of Miami (Fla.) and Brian Matusz of San Diego have been selected as finalists for The Roger Clemens Award, which honors the top pitcher in college baseball. The winner will be announced this summer in Houston.

The four pitchers were selected from a field of 10 semifinalists in a national vote of all Division 1 head baseball coaches, selected national college baseball media, previous winners of the R.
