ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The schedule has been finalized and two state‐of‐the‐art major league venues have been added to the 2010 Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, event manager API Sports announced today. Doubleheaders at Dunedin Stadium and Bright House Field highlight a slate that features 30 games over three days, Feb. 26‐28, 2010, at current and former big league facilities in the St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla., area.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State baseball coach Jake Boss Jr. announced the addition of seven student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent and will report to campus this fall. The summer signees include: Dane Frazier (Mattawan, Mich.), Bryce Jenney (Northville, Mich.), John Martinez (Auburn Hills, Mich.), Chad Nielsen (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Trey Popp (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Chase Rihtarchik (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Joe Zwierzynski (Crystal Lake, Ill.). The freshman class for the fall of 2009 will number 14 student-athletes, as the seven who recently signed join the previously-announced seven that committed in November 2008.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Following an inaugural event in which nearly 17,000 spectators attended games in a three-day period, the second Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been confirmed for the weekend of Feb. 26-28, 2010. Nolan Moody threw Michigan State’s first no-hitter in over sixteen years to earn CBB Pitcher of the Week, and Chris Wallace of Houston put together a 9-for-18 week at the plate, including three homeruns and thirteen RBI, after missing nineteen games after taking a fastball to the face during the final game of the Houston College Classic earlier this year to earn CBB Hitter of the Week.
Moody toed the rubber for the opening game of the Spartans’ series against Northwestern, and he didn’t disappoint. Moody had a perfect game working until a two-out walk in the eighth inning. He would walk one more batter in the ninth, but a game-ending double play sealed the no-hitter and Michigan State victory. Moody also struck out five batters, which tied his previous career-high. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 5, today. Eastern Illinois senior outfielder Brett Nommensen was named National Hitter of the Week, while Michigan State senior right-handed pitcher Nolan Moody was named National Pitcher of the Week. With a new coaching staff in place and a newly upgrade stadium the Michigan State Spartans approach the 2009 with optimism in the air and new beginnings abound. As the youngest team in the Big Ten, the Spartans are out to prove being green isn’t a bad thing, especially when it serves as your school’s color.

PETERSBURG, FL – Due to the recent unavailability of Progress Energy Park, the schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge has been adjusted to include games at McKechnie Field in Bradenton and Red McEwen Field at the University of South Florida. The BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, begins on Friday, Feb. 20.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Despite harsh winter conditions, construction continues to move along on the new McLane Baseball Stadium as vertical steel supports for the stands were erected last week.
McLane Baseball Stadium is designed for 2,500 seats with 400 chair back seats and 2,100 bench-style seats. Drayton and Elizabeth McLane provided MSU with a $4 million commitment toward the stadium.
The Spartans are scheduled to play their inaugural game at the stadium April 3 against Northwestern.

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network will nationally televise up to 30 Big Ten baseball games, including the entire Big Ten Baseball Tournament, and 25 Big Ten softball games this spring. Every game will be produced in high definition.
