The Minnesota baseball team has finalized its 2009 schedule according to an announcement by head coach John Anderson. The Golden Gophers will face four teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Minnesota will also play 25 of its 52 games at home this year. The Golden Gophers will play 11 games at Siebert Field and 14 in the Metrodome this season. Read the rest of this entry »

Minnesota Assistant Head Coach Rob Fornasiere has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the ABCA Assistant Coach of the Year award. Fornasiere will received the honors on Sunday, January 4, 2009 as part of the annual Honors Luncheon that will be held from 12:15 to 2 p.m. at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina as part of the ABCA Coaches Convention.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been released, API Management and Marketing announced today. Twenty-seven games will be held February 20-22, 2009, at venues in St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Dunedin, FL, highlighted by Friday and Saturday evening doubleheaders at Knology Park and Bright House Field. Two of the nation’s most prominent collegiate athletic conferences have come to an agreement to participate in a unique and ground-breaking season-opening baseball tournament in Florida. The inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, will feature 27 games February 20-22, 2009, at various spring training venues in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, API Marketing announced today.

The main reason why we saw the Uniform Start Date was that the Big Ten Conference really used their leverage to implement the new rule to level the playing field across the nation. The Big Ten this past weekend picked up some embarrassing losses with Ohio State losing to Air Force and Maine. The Michigan Wolverines picked up a loss to GA Southern on Friday with another bad loss earlier in the year to Portland. Pepperdine 10 TCU 4

MINNEAPOLIS — #29 Pepperdine scored six runs in the top of the ninth to complete its second consecutive rally, and The Waves claimed a 10-4 win over TCU on Saturday at the Minnesota Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis.

The Waves (5-1) extended their winning streak to four games, while TCU fell to 3-3. The Waves trailed yesterday to Tulane 2-1 in the sixth inning, but rallied to claim a 4-2 win over the #18th-ranked Green Wave. Pepperdine improved to 2-0 at the Dairy Queen Classic with the win. TCU 7 Minnesota 4

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Down to their last strike in the ninth inning, Clint Arnold came through with a clutch single that tied the game at four where the TCU Horned Frogs eventually came away with a 12-inning, 7-4 victory over Minnesota at the Dairy Queen Classic. We discussed the top players that are playing in the tournament hosted by the Minnesota Gophers with TCU, Pepperdine, and Tulane joining them. CSTV continues their season previews with Eric Sorensen checking in on the Big Ten and the Big 12. Sorensen predicts that Michigan will win the Big Ten after a great run into the Super Regionals last season. He puts Minnesota and Ohio State as contenders with Penn State as the darkhorse. The full preview is available here. He also checks in on the Big 12 which is one of the top conferences in the country. He states that the Big 12 is wide open with the favorites being Texas, Missouri, and Texas A&M. He lists Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State as contenders with Kansas as a darkhorse. The TCU Horned Frogs have released their 2008 schedule recently. The Horned Frogs will open up the season on February 22nd when they host Cal-State Fullerton for the first game of a three game set. This game marks the beginning of the Dave Serrano era at Fullerton. The next weekend they will head up to Minneapolis to take part in the MetroDome tournament with Minnesota, Pepperdine, and Tulane. If you are in the Minnesota area, you need to make it to that tournament to see top of the line College Baseball as each school is expected to finish near the top of their conference. TCU then heads home for two non-conference weekday games before hosting Ole Miss for a three game set. TCU finishes their non-conference weekend schedule with a visit to Wichita State from March 14th-16th. TCU then heads into conference match-ups on the weekends and get the key match-up against Utah in Lupton Stadium on May 2nd-4th. TCU will also host the Mountain West Conference tournament on May 20th-25th. The full schedule is available in PDF format here. The College Baseball Blog expects TCU to make a run for the conference title in 2008.

Fresno State 11 Minnesota 6

The Bulldogs picked up an 11-6 victory over the Gophers to advance to the Regional Final against Cal-State Fullerton which took place later on Sunday. The Gophers end the season with a 41-18 record.

Cal-State Fullerton 13 Fresno State 2

Cal-State Fullerton advances to the Super Regionals after defeating Fresno State 13-2 in the NCAA Regional that took place in San Diego. The Bulldogs committed six errors in the game which did not help their cause against such a powerhouse in the Titans. Fresno ends to the season with a 38-29 record. Fullerton will play in the Super Regionals against UCLA at a Site to be announced on Monday.

Minnesota 6 San Diego 5

Minnesota knocked off San Diego 6-5 in an elimination game on Saturday. The Toreros scored five runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings but lost in the tenth inning on a single by Minnesota’s Derek McCallum. Minnesota will play Fullerton/Fresno State on Sunday while San Diego ends the season with a 43-18 record.

Cal-State Fullerton 6 Fresno State 4

The Titans advanced to the Final games of the San Diego Regional after knocking off Fresno State 6-4 in the nightcap on Saturday night. Evan McCarthur and Josh Fellhauer combined for five hits to lead the offense. Fullerton will wait to play the winner of Fresno State/Minnesota in the second game on Sunday.
