Share Louisiana State hosts the Baton Rouge Regional as the No. 3 national seed. The Tigers take on Southern in the opening game Friday at 1 p.m., and Baylor meets Minnesota in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
The losing teams from those games meet in an elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m., while the winners meet Saturday at 6 p.m. with a berth in the championship game on the line. Argo led the Fighting Illini as they swept Penn State on the road and claimed a share of the Big Ten lead. The freshman went 8-for-12 with multiple hits in each game against the Nittany Lions, also posting eight RBI while scoring six runs and knocking five extra-base hits, including a multi-homer effort on Saturday. The designated hitter opened the weekend with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring and driving in three runs while falling a single shy of the cycle in Illinois’ 7-3 win. On Saturday, he again went 3-for-4, this time driving in five runs and scoring two on a pair of homers as his squad earned the 11-5 victory. In the series finale on Sunday, Argo went 2-for4 with a run as his team earned the sweep in a 9-2 win. In the three-game series, the freshman hit .667 with a .692 on-base percentage and a slugging average of 1.667, giving him an OPS of 2.359. Share MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 19, today. Minnesota’s junior second baseman Derek McCallum was named National Hitter of the Week, while North Carolina junior right-handed pitcher Alex White was named National Pitcher of the Week. McCallum was nearly unstoppable at the plate last week, combining to post a .636 average with a .680 on-base percentage and a 1.636 slugging mark over five games. In a pair of mid-week matchups against UW-Milwaukee and South Dakota State, the junior went 3-for-4 in each contest with a combined five runs, 12 RBI and three home runs. His 12-RBI total marks the highest for a Golden Gopher in a two-game stretch since at least 1997, and his three homers over two games is a program best since 2004. Read the rest of this entry »

Sophomore Micah Gibbs drove in the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead No. 5 LSU past Northwestern State, 2-1, Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.
Coming in to pinch hit for first baseman Buzzy Haydel with one out and the bases loaded, Gibbs drilled a 2-2 offering into the gap in right center field to break open a 1-1 tie and bring senior Derek Helenihi home for the victory.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore southpaw Matt Leonard pitched six strong innings and junior left fielder Luke Yoder drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning single as Cal Poly completed a three-game series sweep against Sacramento State with a 6-2 victory in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon before 1,427 in Baggett Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs extended their winning streak to six games and improved to 6-1 on the year, their best start since going 7-1 to open the 2001 campaign. Sacramento State fell to 1-5.

Fresno State. Fresno State lost two of three against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene this weekend. In game one on Friday the Bulldogs lost a pitching duel 1-0 on Friday. Oregon’s Andrew Schmidt hit a walk-off single with two outs giving the Ducks the victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,777. Holden Sprague pitched 7.2 innings giving up just four hits and walking just one.
On Saturday Oregon’s bats pushed them to a 7-1 victory over Fresno State. The Ducks scored two runs in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Fresno State starter Sean Bonesteele lasted just 2.1 innings giving up five runs, all earned and allowed five hits. He also walked four batters.

Share The Big Ten will open the 2009 baseball season at the Big East-Big Ten Challenge on Feb. 20.

PETERSBURG, FL – Due to the recent unavailability of Progress Energy Park, the schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge has been adjusted to include games at McKechnie Field in Bradenton and Red McEwen Field at the University of South Florida. The BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, begins on Friday, Feb. 20.

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network will nationally televise up to 30 Big Ten baseball games, including the entire Big Ten Baseball Tournament, and 25 Big Ten softball games this spring. Every game will be produced in high definition.
