The last day a MLB team can sign one of their draft picks is this Friday August 15th by Midnight. Jordan Danks and the Chicago White Sox are at a standstill over bonus money. (Baseball Prospectus reported that he signed a contract which was posted on this very site. The report was erroneous.) Jordan wants 2nd round money and the White Sox are hesitant to give him 2nd round money. Alan Trubow of the Austin American Statesman has written an article this evening talking with the Danks about this very subject.

Pat White who serves as the starting quarterback on the West Virginia football team and was recently selected in the 50th round in the 2008 MLB draft and in the fourth round in 2004. He apparently approached West Virginia head coach Greg Van Zant but was turned away from playing. This is interesting since White is a pretty accomplished baseball player and his bat could have been used on a 35-21 team which finished under .500 in the Big East conference at 13-14. Tim Fedroff of North Carolina was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Indians in this past year’s draft and faces a tough decision on whether to return to UNC or sign before August 15th. He led the team in home runs (12), slugging percentage (642), total bases (183), at-bats (285) and triples (5), while finishing a close second on the club in batting average (.404), hits (115), doubles (22), RBI (71) and stolen bases (14-for-17). If he decided to return to the UNC squad for his junior season, it would give the Tar Heels two of the top hitters in the country as he would join junior to be Dustin Ackley in the lineup. Other than College Baseball’s top eight teams in Omaha, most of America has turned their full attention to the ever turbulent summer. This means summer leagues, coaching movement and draft watching. Things are no different at Vanderbilt, which for the third straight year failed to escape the Regionals. But that doesn’t mean the summer has not been active already.

Vanderbilt features six roster members on teams in the prestigious Cape Cod League. The article, found here, is a great glimpse into the magic of the league and what it means to the players and the community proper. I have a feeling our publisher, Brian Foley, will enjoy it as a top-notch fan of the league. Read the rest of this entry »
