Tim Fedroff of North Carolina was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Indians in this past year’s draft and faces a tough decision on whether to return to UNC or sign before August 15th. He led the team in home runs (12), slugging percentage (642), total bases (183), at-bats (285) and triples (5), while finishing a close second on the club in batting average (.404), hits (115), doubles (22), RBI (71) and stolen bases (14-for-17). If he decided to return to the UNC squad for his junior season, it would give the Tar Heels two of the top hitters in the country as he would join junior to be Dustin Ackley in the lineup. Cashner signs with Cubs
Pitcher is third Frog to sign professional contract

FORT WORTH, Texas – Andrew Cashner, the 19th overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, has inked a contract with the Chicago Cubs. He becomes the third Horned Frog to sign a professional contract this summer. As part of the deal, the right-handed pitcher receives an invitation to the 2009 big league Spring Training camp in 2009.

Cashner will be on-air with Cubs broadcaster’s tonight during the Cubs’ game with Cincinnati. Tomorrow afternoon, Cashner will throw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field prior to the start of the Cubs’ series finale with Cincinnati.

Other than College Baseball’s top eight teams in Omaha, most of America has turned their full attention to the ever turbulent summer. This means summer leagues, coaching movement and draft watching. Things are no different at Vanderbilt, which for the third straight year failed to escape the Regionals. But that doesn’t mean the summer has not been active already.

On the Cape

Vanderbilt features six roster members on teams in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Friend of the College Baseball Blog Jarred Amato (publisher of SportsVU, a Vanderbilt Sports Blog) traveled to Wareham to spend some time with Vanderbilt sophomore leftfielder Steven Liddle as he started his season with the Gatemen. The article, found here, is a great glimpse into the magic of the league and what it means to the players and the community proper. Florida State’s Buster Posey is the ACC Player of the Year and was the 5th pick of the 1st round.

Charlotte’s Chris Taylor, was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Co-Player of the Year, and was drafted in the 45th round by the Cardinals. From the Atlantic Sun, Florida Gulf Coast’s Jason Peacock won the league’s top individual award, and was selected by the Florida Marlins with the 778th pick in the 26th round. The Wichita State Shockers head down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles in a Super Regional showdown between two of the historic programs in College Baseball. The Shockers enter with a 47-15 overall record while going 19-5 in the Missouri Valley conference. The Seminoles on the other hand have a 52-11 record and 24-6 in the ACC. The Arizona Wildcats will head across the country to take on the Miami (FL) Hurricanes in a Super Regional series in Coral Gables FL. The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 41-17 record and a 12-12 record in the highly competitive PAC-10 conference. The Hurricanes have a 50-8 record while going 23-5 in the ACC. The NC State Wolfpack head down to Athens Ga to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a matchup between ACC/SEC schools. The Wolfpack have a 40-20 overall record while going 18-11 in the ACC. Although High Schoolers Tim Beckham, Eric Hosmer and Kyle Skipworth were chosen 1st (Tampa), 3rd (Royals) and 6th (Marlins), College platers dominated the top of the draft on Thursday.  Leading the way were a crop of powerful position players, including an inordinate number of 1st basemen and a distinct lack of pitchers. 

Of the first 27 players taken in the draft, 20 were from the college ranks.  Interestingly enough, 15 of the first 18 players selected were position players, a rare split in a first year player draft.  But this was a crop of talented bats, with 11 catchers, firstbasemen and third sackers of those first 18 picks. Tim Beckham from Griffin Ga will be the number 1 pick in the MLB 2008 Draft today at 2 pm by the Tampa Bay Rays. This goes against many experts including ESPN’s Keith Law that expected Florida State catcher Buster Posey to be selected in the top spot. I think this selection is better since Beckham has a bigger upside then Posey and could be a real special player. This development will hurt the Southern Cal program as Beckham was expected to be a threat in the Trojans program over the next few years. The full MLB.com article is available here.

In the past 6 season, Vanderbilt University has become one of the thorns in the sides of those trying to recruit high school players committed to Coach Tim Corbin and recruiting coordinator Eric Bakich.  A recent NYTimes profile of Pedro Alvarez disclosed at least one of the secret strategies used by Coaches Corbin and Bakich (a tax planner and a thick three ring binder).  Commodore recruits are told to weigh the value of a Vanderbilt diploma against any potential signing bonus, which a tax planner brings down to earth with an analysis of taxes against the bonus, living expenses during the life of potential contracts and certain luxury purchases.  Read the rest of this entry »
