If time flies when you’re having fun, the last 23 years must have flown by in the blink of an eye for William Carey University head baseball coach Bobby Halford.

So you’ll have to forgive Halford if he can’t recall exactly how many times he’s

coached a team to a conference championship or can’t remember right off the bat the precise number of wins he’s totaled in his career.

“The competition of the game is what it’s all about for me,” Halford said. “I’ve always enjoyed just the game itself and what all goes into it. The wins and losses, that’s something I don’t put a lot into.” Read the rest of this entry »

Two of the NAIA’s pre-season favorites start their seasons this weekend.

#4 Biola hosts Simpson today.They will then make a trip to Hawaii, playing Hawaii Pacific Feb. 2-3, and Hawaii-Hilo Feb. 4.

#5  Embry-Riddle opens their season in Lakeland, FL, at Southeastern, on Feb. 3.

#10 LSU-Shreveport, already 3-0 on the season, have their home opener against LSU-Alexandria Jan. 30-31, and host Southern Arkansas on Feb. 4. Read the rest of this entry »

The 53rd NAIA baseball season starts on Friday, with Belhaven at Spring Hill (Mobile, AL), La Sierra at Concordia-Irvine, LSU-Shreveport at U. of Mobile, Bethany (CA) at San Diego Christian, Wayland Baptist at Texas-Brownsville, and Patten at The Master’s (Santa Clarita, CA). UTB/TSC will launch a tough 55-game baseball schedule January 23, featuring 36 home games and the Scorpions’ first games against NCAA Division I competition.

The Scorpions will meet The University of Texas-Pan American, a member of the NCAA Division I, in two games in Edinburg April 8 and 22.

CALDWELL, ID — The College of Idaho, in conjunction with the City of Caldwell and the Caldwell American Legion baseball program, unveiled the Coyotes new baseball field, Wolfe Field, on Tuesday afternoon.

Wolfe Field, named in honor of the Wolfe Family – longtime supporters of The C of I and Caldwell, located at the corner of Griffiths Parkway and Linden Street – about one-half mile east of Simplot Stadium, is currently under construction to become the new home of the Coyote baseball program, along with home of the Caldwell Bobcats and Caldwell Silver Streaks American Legion Teams.

The infield will consist of FieldTurf – the first artificial playing surface on an Idaho baseball field, while the outfield will consist of grass. Funding for Phase 1 is nearly complete, with funding beginning for Phase 2 and 3 of the project. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a few that are out:

Lee: Last year’s runner-up starts the season on Feb. 6, hosting Illinois Institute of Technology. They play Auburn-Montgomery April 17-18, and Cumberland April 21. The Flames have picked up two D-I transfers, Tyler Roberts (Memphis) and Trey Burstrom (Tennessee). They have also added Julian Alvarez, who hit .419 and 26 home runs for Bacone last year, and two players drafted in 2006, Jeff Ramirez and Rashad Taylor. Read the rest of this entry »

Terry Puhl

Terry Puhl

Terry Puhl, Field Manager of Canada’s entry in the 2008 Olympics, was a Major League outfielder for 15 seasons with the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals. He was a National League All Star in 1978 and played in the 1980 National League Championship Series vs. Philadelphia, setting a then-NLCS record with a .526 batting average. He holds the Major League record for career fielding percentage (.993).

Puhl’s day job is Coach of the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars, an NAIA program entering its second year. He gave this interview on his way home from Beijing.

A couple of former MLB players were recently named new assistant coaches. Rusty Greer who made a name for himself with the Texas Rangers was recently added to the coaching staff of NAIA school Texas Wesleyan. He served as the manager of the Colleyville Lone Stars of the Texas Collegiate League in 2007 and this summer is coaching the Dallas Baseball Academy which is a 17 year old team. Britt Reames who pitched in the Major Leagues most recently in 2006 has been named the new pitching coach of Furman University. He is a 1996 graduate of The Citadel and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on November 1st. The full article is available here.

Specifically, Scott is the Manager of Championship Sports for men’s soccer, Division II men’s basketball, wrestling, and baseball.

The main topic was the NAIA’s “direct qualification” scheme which goes into effect for the 2009 season. The NAIA announced a few months ago that the field for the Baseball National Championship would consist of the host team and the winners of nine double-elimination “sectional” tournaments. Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston Idaho is a force at the NAIA level winning 15 championships. Some people are comparing their success to the New York Yankees domination of MLB baseball. The Daily Herald out of Everett Washington has a great article on the program which is available here.
