LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell smashed five home runs and received a pair of strong pitching performances as it swept a baseball doubleheader from Army Saturday at Depew Field. The Bison won game one 2-1 behind a complete game five-hitter from Trey Frahler (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and a two-run home run by Andrew Loucks (Mississauga, Ontario/Appleby College). In game two, Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) hit two home runs and Chris Yamaguchi (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) limited the Black Knights to two runs on eight hits in eight innings to improve to 4-0 this season as Bucknell triumphed 18-2. Patriot League Player of the Week (March 2-8)
Rob Froio, Lafayette So., CF, Midlothian, Ill.
Froio gives Lafayette its third consecutive Player of the Week honoree after an outstanding weekend to help the Leopards to a four-game sweep at Maryland-Eastern Shore. Froio was nearly perfect in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep, going 10-for-12 with six runs scored and seven RBI in the two games. He was 6-for-6 with six RBI and three runs in Lafayette’s 17-5 victory. Player of the Week
Daniel Bierce, Lafayette Sr., SS, Virginia Beach, Va.
Bierce helped the Leopards to a 2-1 record over the weekend by posting multiple-hit performances in each outing. He opened the season by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth of a 2-1 win over Ohio on Saturday. Later in the day, Bierce posted a perfect 3-for-3 game at the plate with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and two doubles as Lafayette beat Davidson, 10-6. Bierce concluded his weekend with a 2-for-5 day in a loss to Davidson on Sunday. He posted a .583 batting average (7-for-12) on the season’s first weekend, with four runs scored, a home run and four RBI in the three games. Read the rest of this entry »

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Leopards began their 2009 baseball season with a bang, taking both games of a season-opening doubleheader in Davidson. Lafayette won a 2-1 decision against Ohio in the day’s first game and capped off the afternoon with a 10-6 win over host Davidson.
Senior shortstop Daniel Bierce led the Lafayette offense with five hits, including a two-run home run against Davidson, and added three RBI. Sophomore righty Zach Fritz tossed 6.2 shutout innings against Ohio and Corey Shea threw four innings of one-run relief in the Leopards’ second victory. Read the rest of this entry »

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia pitchers combined on a shutout of Bucknell and limited the Bison to just four hits as the Bucknell baseball team dropped its season opener to the Cavaliers, 12-0, Friday evening at a chilly and blustery Davenport Field. Center Valley, Pa. – Army has been selected as the favorite to claim the 2009 Patriot League Baseball title in a preseason poll of the League’s head coaches and sports information directors.
The Black Knights claim the top spot with 48 points and eight first-place votes after finishing first in the regular season last year with a 13-7 mark in League games. Navy followed in second place with 37 points and two first-place votes. Holy Cross claimed a first-place vote and came in third position with 30 points. Defending champion Bucknell and Lafayette shared fourth place in the poll with 24 points, with the Leopards also claiming a first-place vote. Lehigh rounds out the poll with 17 points. Head coaches and sports information directors were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Read the rest of this entry »

Share We continue our countdown to the 2009 season by looking at the Patriot League. The Bucknell Bison won the Patriot League Tournament last season by upsetting Army and Navy to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Bison made an impact on the NCAA Tournament by knocking off number 4 national seed Florida State 7-0 in the opening round of the Tallahassee Regional behind a tremendous pitching performance from Matthew Wilson. The Bison went on to lose the next two games in the Regional but the impact that the team made last year will be memorable. Read the rest of this entry »

Share The Navy Midshipmen Examiner writer Tom Flynn has an excellent article previewing college baseball in the state of Maryland. He has the Maryland Terrapins as the top program in the state. The Terps usually struggle against the highly competitive teams in the conference but have the best team. He has CAA runner up Towson in the second spot after they went 30-28. The Navy Midshipmen come in at the third spot after another 30 win campaign and an appearance in the Patriot League Championship series. The rest of the top five is filled out by America East member UMBC and Northeast Conference member Mount St. Mary’s. Read the rest of this entry »

Share Naval Academy alum Jonathan Johnston was recently called to duty by the Navy ending his minor league baseball career. He was called into action on June 10th when his commanding officer left a voicemail on his phone. He was promptly shipped out and now is currently somewhere with his exact location not known due to security reasons. Read the rest of this entry »
