IRVING, Texas – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its list of 2009-10 officers today, as approved recently by the organization’s executive board. These officers begin their duties immediately and will serve in these roles through the 2010 College World Series.
The new president is Chuck Dunlap, longtime baseball contact for the Southeastern Conference and representative of the NCBWA at several NCAA World Series’ in Omaha. Dunlap is steeped in the long Mississippi State tradition as a graduate and youthful follower of the Bulldogs and succeeds 2008-09 President Joe Dier, the 23-year chief baseball contact for MSU.

DALLAS, Texas – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continued its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 11th year with its 2009 weekly surveys. This season’s polls have been circulated from Feb. 23-June 25 following the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb. OMAHA, Neb. – North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake and San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg have been named as finalists for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The winner of the Howser Trophy will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2, during the inaugural College Baseball Awards Show, held at the United Spirit Arena and shown on MLB.com. The nationally broadcasted event will be followed by the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 3 in Lubbock.

HOUSTON, TX – After leading his team to the program’s first appearance at the NCAA College World Series, Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was named the National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association.
The award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was chosen from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year and the coaches of the eight NCAA College World Series teams. O’Connor, who was the only coach to appear on every voter’s ballot, received the honor Saturday morning at the Omaha Press Club.

Birmingham, Ala. — San Diego State relief pitcher Addison Reed is the 2009 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Saturday in Omaha on the opening day of the College World Series.
Reed recorded a nation-leading 20 saves in 20 opportunities this season. He finished the season with a microscopic 0.65 earned run average and 38 strikeouts over his 27.2 innings of work. Reed has allowed only seven walks, with two of those being intentional passes. Only one of the 20 hits he allowed in 2009 went for extra bases (a double vs. Nevada on Feb. 26).
His save total is a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference season record, breaking the old mark record of 17 set by Royce Ring during the 2002 season. The Aztec and conference career marks of 26 are held by Ring as well.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Several candidates for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy highlight the 14th Annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Team announced Wednesday.
The 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA All-America Team includes eight now-consensus selections, and such Howser Trophy semifinalists as NCAA World Series-bound 1B Dustin Ackley of North Carolina and Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake, along with fellow luminaries pitchers Kyle Bellamy of Miami (Fla.), A.J. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A total of 37 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the annual Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced today.
The 2009 Pro-Line Athletic NCBWA Freshman All-American Team is comprised from 17 conferences and 10 conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of 12 conference “Rookie of the Year” winners.
