Newport starter Chase Reid dominated in his first start of the season, striking out 19 batters in a 6-1 victory over Torrington in New England Collegiate Baseball League Southern Division action Friday night.

The 19 strikeouts – one shy of the Major League Baseball single-game mark – are an NECBL league record.  After allowing a home run to Corey Shimada to lead off the game, Reid allowed just four hits the rest of the way.  He struck out the side four times, and had at least two strikeouts in six different innings.  He struck out every Torrington starter at least once, and fittingly, Reid ended the game by striking out Josh Chasse. Playing in front of a sellout crowd of 2,763 at Cardines Field, the USA National Team defeated Newport 8-3 Thursday night. There were also at least eight scouts in attendance, from San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta and Kansas City among others, who were beginning their evaluations for the 2009 (and 2010) MLB Drafts. (NEWPORT, R.I.) – Kentrail Davis (Tennessee; Theodore, Ala.) was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI to propel the USA Baseball National Trials Team to an 8-3 victory Thursday night over the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at Cardines Field. The National Trials team improved to 6-2 with the victory and finished the NECBL portion of its tour 5-2 against the league.

With the score tied 1-1 in the third, Davis ripped his fourth round-tripper of the tour off the light standard in beyond the 20-foot high right-field fence. Pittsfield 5 Team USA 2

USA Baseball Logo(PITTSFIELD, Mass.) – Two errors led to three unearned runs, and that made the difference as the USA Baseball National Trials Team dropped a 5-2 decision Tuesday to the Pittsfield Dukes of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at Wahconah Park. The game was the first of two Tuesday for U.S. team traveled, which traveled to Torrington, Conn., immediately following the game for a nightcap against the Torrington Twisters.

After taking 1-0 lead on a two-out, first-inning double from Blake Smith (California; Modesto, Calif.), the National Trials team allowed four runs on three hits, a hit batter and one costly error in the bottom of the second. Perry Silverman had the key hit in the inning, a two-run double off the wall in left-center. The Dukes added another run on a walk, a passed ball and an error in the fourth. (North Adams, Mass.) – Dusty Coleman (Wichita State; Sioux City, S.D.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, leading the 2008 USA Baseball National Trials Team to a 6-4 victory Sunday night over the North Adams SteepleCats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at Joe Wolfe Field. The CBB made the trip to Lynn MA to check on the Team USA Trials that are taking place this week during a series of exhibition games against teams from the NECBL. Team USA entered the game against the North Shore Navigators with a 2-0 record with victories over the Keene Swamp Bats and Holyoke Sox. The Navigators entered with a 4-2 record. HOLYOKE, Mass. – Josh Fellhauser’s two-out RBI single capped a three-run sixth inning that propelled the 2008 USA Baseball National Trials Team to a 7-2 victory Friday night over the Holyoke Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at MacKenzie Stadium. The Brown Media Relations department has put out a release recapping the summer leagues the Brown Bears took part in. The article looks at Rob Hallberg (Manchester (CT) Silkworms NECBL) and Jeff Dietz (Wareham Gatemen CCBL) who led the Bears to the 2007 Ivy League championship. The full release is available here.

The North Carolina and Florida State Media Relations Department have each released their respective summer league recaps. The biggest award recieved from a Tar Heel player was Drew Poulk who picked up the Rookie of the Year award in the NECBL after hitting .354. The full release from UNC is available here. Buster Posey had the strongest summer with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox as he led them to their second straight CCBL title. He hit .281 for the summer but was solid behind the plate. Following a season that saw the University of Virginia Cavaliers host an NCAA Regional in Charlottesville, VA and finish 45-16, and saw a school-record six Wahoos drafted in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, a number of Hoos are currently playing in summer collegiate wood bat leagues around the country.

Team USA completed their tour of New England with a 5-4 victory over the Newport Gulls (NECBL). Team USA scored four runs in the first inning with the first run coming on a double by Justin Smoak (South Carolina). Brett Wallace (Arizona State) then followed up with a three run homer in his first at bat of the summer with Team USA. The coaching staff of Team USA used the game to get five pitchers work in the game. Jacob Thompson (UVA) started and gave up no runs on one hit and two walks. Mike Minor (Vanderbilt) came in for two innings while giving up two hits and striking out four batters. Eric Surkamp (NC State) then came in to pitch two innings but gave up one run on two hits. Josh Romanski (San Diego) came in relief of Surkamp and gave up three runs in his two innings of work. Cody Satterwhite (Ole Miss) gave up two hits but did not give up a run as he got his first save of the summer for Team USA. The team will be off until June 29th when they play Chinese Taipei in Burlington NC.

The Torrington Twisters (NECBL) edged Team USA 4-3 behind a strong start from Steve Strasberg who struck out seven out of the twelve batters he faced. The Torrington staff held Team USA to only three hits as Justin Smoak picked up two hits including a two run homer in the eighth inning. Garrett Green went 2-3 with two runs scored and a homer in the victory for the Twisters. Team USA will be back in action on Sunday as they finish their tour of New England when they visit the Newport Gulls.

Team USA continued their strong start to their summer season with a 5-0 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers. Pedro Alvarez led the team at the plate for the second straight day by going 3-4 with three RBI in the win. Brian Matusz started for Team USA while giving up one hit and hitting one batter in four scoreless innings of work. Team USA will be back in action on Saturday when they head down to Torrington CT.
