Share Reno, Nev. – The University of Nevada baseball team will conclude fall practice over the next week by playing its annual Silver & Blue Series at Peccole Park starting on Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. The series is free and open to the public. Next week’s games are set for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and will conclude on Friday with first pitch slated for 8:45 a.m. each day.

Share Washington Huskies baseball will begin the Lindsay Meggs era in 2010. The new head coach released the upcoming season’s schedule for the Huskies, which will see his team start the year in the Tucson Tournament (Feb. 19-21). Coach Meggs will get his first taste of baseball at Husky Ballpark when the team welcomes Fresno State (Feb. 26-28) to Seattle for a weekend series. The Huskies will then hit the road for a season long eight game road trip with stops at Oregon (March 2-3), Long Beach State (March 5-7), and BYU (March 11-13).

Share Reno, Nev. – University of Nevada head baseball coach Gary Powers has hired Chris Pfatenhauer as the new assistant baseball coach for the Wolf Pack. Pfatenhauer’s duties will include coaching third base for the Pack, working with the infielders, assisting with hitting and instruction on base running.
"I am very excited to be a part of the athletic department here at the University of Nevada,” said Pfatenhauer. “Joining the Wolf Pack baseball family that Coach Powers has built is an amazing opportunity for me and my family. I would like to thank Director of Athletics Cary Groth and coach Gary Powers for this wonderful opportunity."

Share Day one of the WAC tournament saw some exciting baseball be played and as was the case all season long the games’ final scores were indicative of how closely bunched the league has been this season. The top two seeds in the tournament, San Jose State (over Nevada) and Louisiana Tech (over Hawai’i) won their opening day games while 4-seed New Mexico State handed 3-seed Fresno State their first loss in tournament play in the past three season (the Bulldogs had previously been 12-0).

Share The WAC tournament begins today and the six teams that are participating are the six teams that were picked in the preseason to be in Honolulu at the end of the season. However, that’s where the good prognostication ends.
Fresno State, the three time defending regular season, conference tournament and defending national champion was once again picked to win the league but they faltered in the early part of the conference season and nearly missed the conference tournament but used a four game sweep on the final weekend of play to go from 7th place to a tie for third place. Nevada, the team picked to finish third in the league was swept in the final two weekends of play to finish sixth. At one point the Wolf Pack were in first place in the league. HONOLULU, HI – The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2009 all-WAC baseball teams and postseason awards as selected by the league’s head coaches. Fresno State senior third baseman Tom Mendonca was named the Player of the Year and San Jose State senior Ryan Shopshire earned Pitcher of the Year honors. The Freshman of the Year award went to Hawai‘i outfielder Kolten Wong. San Jose State’s Sam Piraro was named WAC Coach of the Year.
