In the late 1950s, Drayton McLane Jr. (’59 master’s in food marketing management) would walk from his Michigan State University campus dorm to class and marvel at the beauty and activities at Old College Field. By the spring of 2009, the McLane family will have literally brought “new life” to its baseball facility through a $4 million commitment to enhance one of the most pristine environments in all of intercollegiate athletics. On Sept. 12, 2008, the MSU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the naming of McLane Baseball Stadium.

Bowling Green opens Fall Practice

Though February and the start of the college baseball season is still months away, the Bowling Green State University baseball team and head coach Danny Schmitz began the preparations for defending the Mid-American Conference Regular-Season title on Monday when they opened up fall workouts. Coach Schmitz, now entering his 19th season at the helm of the Brown and Orange, welcomed 33 players to camp, including 23 players that saw playing time in 2008, two redshirts, two walk-ons and six newcomers.

Teams from around the nation will start up fall practices where they will have 45 days to conduct 33 fall practices with that being said the Texas Longhorns will be conducting scrimmages at several different locations. Primarily, they will be using the Dell Diamond which serves as the home of the Houston Astros AAA team.

Though the completed baseball stadium is still months away, UCA fans can now take a glimpse into the future with the latest architectural renderings of the project, which were just released by the firm of Wittenberg, Delony & Davidson, Inc.

“You can see we’re getting top-notch quality,” said UCA athletic director Brad Teague. “These renderings give us a great look at what the completed facility will look like. You can see from these images that it is going to be an impressive, Division I-quality stadium that will compare favorably around our league.”

The University of Massachusetts baseball program has turned into a bottom feeder in the A-10 and Mike Stone is using the excuse that he has to compete against better programs now with the addition of Charlotte being added to the A-10 recently. I personally think that UMass needs to look at the program at the top since the team has noone that will be drafted this upcoming year and the recruiting needs to step up. Mike Stone complained in a recent Boston Herald article that he only has 2.3 scholarships per class but that comes out to 9.2 scholarships for the entire team. Read the rest of this entry »

Mayor Mike Fahey, left, and David Sokol, chairman of the Qwest Center Omaha governing board.Mayor Mike Fahey stood shoulder to shoulder with David Sokol today to announce that the two had resolved their differences and are ready to move forward with a new downtown baseball stadium.

Sokol, chairman of the board that runs the Qwest Center Omaha, and Fahey signed a memorandum of understanding Monday evening that clears the way for a stadium on the center’s parking lots C and E.

At a press conference today at the Mayor’s Office, Fahey said the city and MECA had overcome a “major hurdle” with the agreement. Read the rest of this entry »

The Omaha World-Herald is reporting that a committee to review whether to build a new stadium in Omaha has past the first major hurdle. The seven member committee decided on some parking lots near the Qwest Center in Omaha to be the place where the new stadium would be built. They looked at renovating Rosenblatt Stadium but say that it is not possible due to logistics which will come out in the coming weeks. The full report is available here.

The University of Kentucky recently held their media day where some interesting news came out. The first article is from the Lexington Herald-Leader which he discusses some of his expectations for the season. The goal he states is getting to Omaha and put the Wildcats on the map. The full article is available here. The next article is from The Courier-Journal talking about Kentucky pitcher Scott Green’s commitment to the UK program. He was drafted last year by the Boston Red Sox in the 15th round but decided to spurn them to come back for his junior campaign. The full article is available here. The biggest news out of the day is the talk of Kentucky getting a new 4,000 seat stadium. The Lexington Herald-Leader is reporting that the plans could be announced next month. Lynchburg, Va. – Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber and the Liberty Athletics Department announced today, the department has entered into a contract which will allow lights to be installed at Worthington Stadium.

“The coaching staff and players are extremely excited to be adding lights to Worthington Stadium,” stated Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman. “It will benefit us in many ways.”

“We are certainly appreciative of the athletics department and the school’s administration commitment to Liberty Baseball. It will allow more people to come out to the games and hopefully, benefit us in recruiting.” Read the rest of this entry »

The University of Oregon has put out plans for their new baseball facility which comes with a price tag of $12-15 million. They have already made an agreement with the Eugene Emeralds to play in the facility as soon as the 2010 season. The first phase of the stadium will be finished by the start of the 2009 season.
