AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Longhorns demonstrated their offensive firepower with a season-high runs total to defeat the Texas State Bobcats, 12-2, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk field.
The Longhorns were led offensively by freshman Kevin Lusson who went 4-for-4 and with a walk on the night and scored five runs. Lusson had two doubles and two RBI. All of these numbers were career-highs for the Austin native.

The Lobos have vaulted to #18 in Baseball America’s national poll, the first time since 1985 they have cracked the Top 25.
The Lobo offense leads the nation in batting average, hits, doubles, and triples.

The Big 12 had six teams in action on Wednesday. The conference had a pretty good showing on the day, going 4-2 overall with some blowout wins. Here is Wednesday’s Big 12 recap.
#11 Baylor 14, Prairie View A&M 1
WACO, Texas — Seventh-ranked Baylor sent 15 batters to the plate in an 11-run first inning and coasted to a 14-1, seven-inning victory over Prairie View A&M in midweek action Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark. Baylor (18-7) improved to 5-0 all-time against Prairie View A&M (15-14) with the win.
Baylor’s 11-run first inning was one run shy of the school record for first-inning runs. The Bears enjoyed a 12-run first inning in the second game of a doubleheader March 17, 1986, against Dallas Baptist. Read the rest of this entry »

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northwestern dropped a pair of games to New Mexico Saturday, falling in a 16-12 shootout in the opening contest before dropping the nightcap 10-6 at Isotopes Park. The Wildcats jumped out to an early four-run lead in the second contest but were unable to hold on.

The Rice baseball team got some solid pitching in surrendering just four hits and shortstop Rick Hague’s two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Owls’ the lead for good on the way to a 6-3 victory over visiting No. 1 Texas before a rowdy, record-setting crowd of 6,193 Tuesday night at Reckling Park.

The Lumberjack baseball team kept the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at bay for the majority of the afternoon, but MVSU was able to scrape across a run in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a season-opening 4-3 win over SFA at the rain-soaked ULM Warhawk Classic.

On Friday evening at Cowboy Diamond on the campus of McNeese State University, the HBU baseball team out-hit McNeese State but fell by a score of 9-6 in the season-opener for both teams.

The TCU Horned Frogs have been selected to win their fourth straight regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship in 2009 in a vote of the seven MWC head coaches and a select media panel. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico has inked 12 players to National Letters of Intent for the fall of 2009 during the recent early signing period. Head Coach Ray Birmingham and his staff have put together one of the best recruiting classes that New Mexico has seen in quite some time. The 2009 class features seven incoming freshman, five of which are New Mexico natives, and five junior college transfers.

Lobo baseball head coach Ray Birmingham recently announced the University of New Mexico schedule for 2009. The Lobos will face five Top 25 teams from 2008, including NCAA College World Series semifinalist Stanford.
“This schedule will be tougher than last season,” said Birmingham. “We played 22 games last season against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. If we are going to be nationally-ranked and advance to the post-season, we have to play these high-caliber teams to get there.”
