NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference recognized its top performers on the baseball field with the announcement of the 2009 All-Conference teams on Tuesday. The student-athletes selected to the first and second teams, as voted on by the 11 head coaches, were honored for their consistent play throughout the season, posting impressive numbers all year.

Share Weekend Winners: Middle Tennessee State was the big weekend winner, as they swept a three game home series with Missouri State. Also posting impressive weekends were UALR, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Troy, and Western Kentucky. UALR took two of three games at home against Northern Iowa, and just missed a sweep with a one run loss on Saturday. Florida Atlantic finished the weekend with a 2-1 series record against Fordham. Florida International posted a 20 run Saturday in route to a two games to one series victory over Jacksonville. Louisiana-Monroe hosted the ULM and ended the weekend with a 2-1 record. New Orleans won the first three games of their home series against Towson before losing the Sunday finale to open the season 3-1. Troy lost a Friday contest against Kentucky in the Caravelle Resort Invitational before winning their next three games to end the tournament at a very solid 3-1. Western Kentucky took a single game from Toledo on Friday night, but the Saturday and Sunday meetings were canceled due to inclement weather. Read the rest of this entry »

NEW ORLEANS — The UNO baseball team held its annual Media Day on Monday at Lakefront Arena.
UNO head coach Tom Walter, along with junior infielder Nick Schwaner and sophomore right-hander Jake Henderson, met with members of the New Orleans media in the Privateer Room to discuss the upcoming 2009 season.

NEW ORLEANS – After winning its second tournament title and making its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in five seasons, along with the majority of its line-up returning, Western Kentucky University is expected to top the Sun Belt Conference in 2009, according to a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches. The Hilltoppers veteran ace Matt Ridings has been tabbed Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while ULM’s shortstop Ben Soignier has been selected as the Preseason Player of the Year. NEW ORLEANS – University of New Orleans baseball coach Tom Walter has signed six players for 2009-10, he announced on Tuesday.
The fifth-year head coach signed utility player Alex Byo, catcher Brandon Clark, shortstops Justin Creel and Johnny Thomas, infielder/catcher Phillip Ivey and outfielder Mike Petello.

DH Mike Gosse sure stood tall for in his Oklahoma Sooners uniform.
As former Montreal Expos manager Felipe Alou used to describe super sub F.P. Santangelo: “It’s not the size of the man, it’s the size of the heart inside the man.”
Gosse has a 6-foot-6 heart.
Gosse (senior, Pitt Meadows, BC) earned 35 first-place ballots to lead the way the ninth annual All-Canadian College Team. He had seven more than First Team votes than 2B Kevin Mailloux (junior, Windsor, Ont.) of the Canisius Golden Griffins.
Results from our usual voting panel of 42 were scored on a 5-3-1 points basis, Our numbers were totaled by a bonded accounting firm of Grant Thornton.

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team announced its 2009 schedule on Monday, and the slate includes 13 games against NCAA Regional competition.
Fifth-year head coach Tom Walter, whose program is coming off back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances, will play 33 home games – including home contests against LSU, Tulane and Kentucky.
“We got an at-large selection into the NCAA Regional last year, and that was because of the strength of our schedule,” Walter said. “This schedule is no different. We are going to see some of the best teams in the country, and a lot of them will be coming to Maestri Field.”

University of New Orleans head baseball coach Tom Walter is looking at 17 new faces on his 2009 roster, and the fifth-year coach will get a lot of opportunities to see them play during the next week.
The Privateers will kick off the 2009 UNO Fall World Series on Saturday and will mix in a Sunday game with in-state rival Nicholls State as part of a busy weekend at Maestri Field.

Rosters Set For Baseball Orange & White Series
Tennessee head baseball coach Todd Raleigh announced the rosters Thursday for the second annual Orange & White World Series, a seven-game fall intrasquad series set to begin Friday at Robert M. Lindsey Field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Friday’s game begins at 6 p.m.
The White team, managed by assistant coach Bradley LeCroy and volunteer assistant coach Nate Headley, will send sophomore left-hander Bryan Morgado to the mound Friday. Morgado’s 4.59 ERA from a season ago is the best of any returning starter, and his five wins last year are tied for the most among returners. In 80 1/3 innings as a freshman, the Miami, Fla., native recorded 104 strikeouts while limiting opposing batters to a .239 average.

Johnny Giavotella was 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs scored, helping New Orleans eliminate Texas Southern from the NCAA tournament with an 18-5 victory Saturday in the Baton Rouge regional.
