Former Huskies baseball pitcher Greg Montalbano, who was inducted into the Northeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005, passed away on Friday, Aug. 21, after a long battle with cancer. He was only 31.
Montalbano was one of Northeastern’s biggest stars on the baseball diamond. After an outstanding career at St. John’s of Shrewsbury, Mass., Montalbano went 19-7 with a 2.55 ERA and 217 strikeouts, which was good for first all-time in program history. In 1999, he was named All-America, All-New England, All-America East and America East Pitcher of the Year. That season, he threw a no-hitter against Niagara on March 20.

Share The CAA starts tournament play in the final year of the six team format. The conference will cut the number of playoff teams to four next season, which is a shame given the parity this year. Entering the final weekend of play, only two teams had locked up spots, and five teams were battling for the remaining three spots on the final day of the season.
James Madison, which won the tournament last season, was knocked out of the playoffs by George Mason in the final weekend and became the first team with a winning CAA record not to make the six team tournament. UNC Wilmington, last season’s regular season champion, will be a three seed heading into the playoffs.
The double elimination tournament starts at noon Wednesday at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C. when top seeded George Mason takes on sixth seeded Delaware. Here’s a rundown of each of the six teams. Read the rest of this entry »

CAMBRIDGE MASS- After a seven run first inning, Northeastern appeared well on its away to securing a midweek non conference win over Harvard and sweeping the brief two game season series between the two.
Three hours later, that was far from the case.
Harvard clawed away at the deficit before a ten run seventh inning catapulted them past the Huskies to a 16-13 win in a wild game that saw the two teams combine to use 34 players, issue 14 walks, ten wild pitches, and hit five batters. The game’s 29 combined runs came on just 22 hits. Read the rest of this entry »

ShareBROOKLINE MASS- After Northeastern’s 6-5 victory over VCU Sunday, Frank Compagnone couldn’t hide his desire to make NU’s first CAA tournament since 2006.
It sure showed on the field.
