RickHeller TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today (Aug. 14) the hiring of Rick Heller as the 28th head baseball coach in the 113-year history of the Sycamore program.

“It is with great excitement that we announce the addition of Rick Heller as head baseball coach at Indiana State,” Prettyman said. “Coach Heller’s teams have had a tremendous history of success both on the field and in the classroom. We welcome coach Heller and his wife Rachelle to the Sycamore family and look forward to his leadership of our baseball program.”

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The University of Northern Iowa baseball team matched a school record for runs scored in a 28-17 rout of Indiana Monday afternoon at Chain O’Lakes Park.

Travis Bennett, James Dinizo and Levi Ferguson each tallied five hits to help the Panthers finish with 28 hits. Dinizo also finished with six RBIs and four runs scored, and Bennett finished with five RBIs and five runs scored. We reported on Monday that Northern Iowa will be dropping baseball at the end of the 2009 season (Click here for article) but it looks like head coach Rick Heller has gotten a reprieve. ST. LOUIS – Missouri State, which returns a dominating veteran pitching staff and solid depth from last year’s Missouri Valley Conference runner-up squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving eight of nine first place votes.

The Bears tallied 80 points and were a sound favorite over second-place pick Creighton (66 points). 2008 champion Wichita State, who secured the remaining first-place vote and 63 points overall, was picked to finish in the third position. Read the rest of this entry »

With today being November 12th, We enter the first step for potential college baseball athletes in deciding on where they will play for the next 3-4 years. The next step will be to see where they get drafted in the MLB Draft in June and the final step will be to see if they make it to campus in September.

Two prep All-Americans highlight a list of three high school standouts that have already signed National Letters of Intent to play baseball at Georgia Tech beginning next fall, head coach Danny Hall announced Wednesday.

The Division Finals of the Western Major Baseball League start on Thursday, August 7, and the matchups are the Sherwood Park (AB) Dukes vs. the Okotoks (AB) Dawgs, and the Regina (SK) Red Sox vs. the Swift Current (SK) Indians.

The Dukes are led by Dan Grant (Northern Iowa; .403, 4 HR, 38 RBI) and Casey Barnes (Kansas Wesleyan; 5-4, 2.76 ERA, 67 K). They defeated the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets three games to one in the first round.

The Dawgs have Manny Kumar (Grambling State; .336, 3 HR, 28 RBI) and Jake Bottari (College of Idaho; 5-0, 0.84 RBI, 43 K). They swept the Lethbridge Bulls in the first round. Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego 9 Hawaii-Hilo 4

HILO, HI – The 19th-raked University of San Diego baseball team (13-7) completed a four-game sweep over the University of Hawaii – Hilo (7-11) with a 9-4 win in five innings Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium.

There was a 40 minute rain delay, followed by a 30 minute lightning delay, then followed by another 20 minute rain delay that caused the game to start late, and because of travel plans for the Torero baseball team to get to Honolulu, the game had to be called after five innings, but does go down as a completed game.
