DURHAM, N.C.–Mississippi and Washington State lead all schools by placing five players apiece on Baseball America’s top prospects lists for 18 different summer college leagues and Team USA. Last summer, Louisiana State and Texas each led the nation with five players apiece on BA’s summer league lists, and those two teams wound up facing off for the national championship at the College World Series.
BA ranked the top 30 prospects for the talent-rich Cape Cod League, and the top 10 prospects in 17 other summer college leagues. In addition, the top 20 Team USA prospects were ranked.

Share The St. Cloud Times has an excellent article looking at Northwoods League umpires Rick Brennan and Ron Brooks who have spent the summer with the league. They have spent the summer traveling through the league facing multiple hour road trips between cities before heading out to the games.

While the regular season ended in May, several Golden Panthers are still taking swings and toeing the rubber as they take part in summer ball.
Tyler Townsend has led the way this summer, putting up terrific numbers for the Winchester Royals of the Valley Baseball League. FIU’s leading home run hitter in 2008 has posted a .405 average while slugging 11 homers, hitting 12 doubles, driving in 34 and getting on base at a .512 clip. Townsend’s outstanding numbers earned him an All-Star nod.

Campbell named Cape Cod All-Star; Volz, Team USA continue to roll through Europe.

HYANNIS, Mass. — Baylor infielder Raynor Campbell was named to the 2008 Cape Cod League All-Star Game, the league announced recently. Campbell, a member of the Wareham Gatemen, was one of two non-pitcher reserves selected for the West All-Stars. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass. The game will be televised on the New England Sports Network (NESN), available on DirecTV channels 623 and 624 (HD).
Campbell, who will be a junior at Baylor next season, ranks seventh in the Cape Cod League with a team-best .342 batting average (38-for-111). His batting average is exactly 100 points higher than the Wareham team average (.242), and Campbell has provided 14 percent of Wareham’s hits this summer. He also has two home runs, nine RBI, 20 runs scored. Campbell ranks fourth in the Cape with a .438 on base percentage.

Share I was shocked to find out that Deadspin.com had linked to some college baseball articles on Monday. The first one revolves around Buzz Bissinger who went to the CWS in Omaha a few weeks ago. Pinckard named Northwoods All-Star; Miller on the shelf; Volz strong for Team USA
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Baylor redshirt freshman Brooks Pinckard was named to the 2008 Northwoods League All-Star Game, the league announced late last week. The game will be played Monday at Warner Park in Madison, Wis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
Pinckard, who has pitched and played the infield for the Eau Claire Express, was named to the team as an infielder. He ranks sixth in the Northwoods League with a .331 batting average. Pinckard has tallied 40 hits, 21 runs, 18 RBI, eight doubles and two triples, and he is 12-for-17 in stolen base attempts. He also has posted an 0-1 record on the mound with one save and a 1.29 ERA. In 7.0 innings, Pinckard has allowed one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Share The University of Illinois infielders Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff were recognized for their summer accomplishments. Bonadonna played for the Duluth Huskies in the Northwoods League where he received the Silver Glove Award (top defensive player) for second basemen. He was also named to the league’s post season All-Star team. Bonadonna also broke the Northwoods league record for stolen bases in a season with 45 in 56 attempts. Wikoff received accolades from Perfect Game Crosschecker as the 24th best prospect in the Northwoods League and picked up a spot on the post season All-Star team. The full release is available here.
