CSTV editor Doug Kroll checks in with an article previewing the top freshmen in the country. He ranks Matt Harvey of North Carolina as the best freshmen entering the season. Eric Sorenson of CSTV recently checked in with one of our favorite baseball coaches in Paul Mainieri of LSU. He discusses many different topics including how much influence his father Demie Mainieri the legendary coach of Miami-Dade North Community College for over 30 years. Sorensen gets Mainieri to discuss how difficult it was to coach at Notre Dame with the strong academic standards and the horrible weather in the Northeast. There are some other suprises in the interview like how Tommy Lasorda is the godfather to Paul’s youngest son and how former ND assistant Brian O’Connor of UVA hit it off with Mainieri. The full interview is available here.

Thanks to CSTV and Eric Sorenson for the great picture of Mainieri with former closer Ryan Doherty.

The Notre Dame baseball program, on the heels of signing a current freshman group that was rated the nation’s fourth-best recruiting class, recently completed the signing of eight more highly-regarded high school seniors to national letters of intent, during the 2007 early signing period. The class, which will join the Irish starting in the fall of 2008, features four lefthanded pitchers - Dustin Ispas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), two-way standout Steve Sabatino (Lockport, Ill.), Ryan Richter (South Bend, Ind.) and Joe Spano (Verona, N.J.) - plus righthander Will Hudgins (Richmond, Va.), the switch-hitting outfield duo of Alex Robinson (Dallas, Texas) and Leighton Cooper (Fort Washington, Md.), and infielder Tommy Chase (Cohasset, Mass.). Sabatino, who will be a position-player candidate at first base and in the outfield, bats from the left side and will help give his class quality hitting ability from both sides of the plate.

Coach Paul Mainieri and Recruiting Coordinator Terry Rooney took home the title of #1 Recruiting Class of 2008. The Collegiate Baseball title was unsurprising as Coach M (in his first year at Baton Rouge after a successful stint in South Bend) and Coach Rooney had assembled a massive class including 12 Freshman and 7 JuCos, including several All-Americans.

The future is certainly looking bright for LSU, which is seeking to restore its position as one of the top programs in the country.

This was the 25th ranking of recruiting classes by Collegiate Baseball. The full release can be found here.
