Virginia beat the seemingly-immortal Stephen Strasburg in the Regionals last week, so they’re confident that playing on the road in the Super Regionals won’t pose as big a problem as people think.

OXFORD, Miss. — It was a night for heroics as sophomore left-hander Drew Pomeranz pitched a complete-game with a career-high 16 strikeouts to tie the school’s single game record as No. 9 Ole Miss (43-18) defeated Western Kentucky (42-20) by a score of 4-1 on Monday to advance to an NCAA Super Regional in the NCAA Tournament. Western Kentucky 11 Missouri 6

OXFORD, Miss. – Western Kentucky University (41-19) jumped on the Missouri Tigers (35-27) early for the second time in three days to post an 11-6 victory on Sunday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium and advance to the program’s first NCAA Regional Championship round appearance in 29 years. The third-seeded Hilltoppers won their second game in three tries in the NCAA Oxford Regional, eliminating the Tigers, and will now face top-seeded and eighth-ranked Ole Miss at 5:00 PM. Ole Miss will be hosting the Oxford Regional with Missouri (Big 12) as the two seed, Western Kentucky (Sun Belt) as the 3rd seed, and the 4th seed Monmouth (Northeast Conference). Ole Miss was tied for first in the SEC West. While Missouri finish third in the Big 12 and lost to Texas in the Big 12 Tournament Championship game.Western Kentucky was tied for first in the Sun Belt but lost in the semifinal of the Sun Belt Tournament. Monmouth finish fourth in the Northeast Conference but won that Conference Tournament. The winner of the Oxford Regional will be paired up with the winner of the Irvine Regional. The NCAA has released the 2009 regional host sites.  The ACC earned four regional hosts: Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, and North Carolina.  Florida, LSU, and Ole Miss will be hosting from the SEC.  The Big 12 will have Texas and Oklahoma as hosts, and Conference USA will also have two hosts: Rice and East Carolina.  Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine will host out of the Big West.  Read the rest of this entry »

The first round of the SEC Tournament is in the books.  Here is a rundown of the day’s action.

Vanderbilt 4, #2 LSU 1

HOOVER, Ala. ­­— Mike Minor pitched his second complete game victory in three games to lead Vanderbilt to a 4-1 win over No. 2 LSU Wednesday night in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference tournament at Regions Park.

Minor (6-4), pitching on four days rest, scattered six hits over nine innings and allowed just one run while striking out five and walking three. Read the rest of this entry »

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Alabama outfielder Kent Matthes was selected 2009 SEC Baseball Player of the Year, LSU’s Louis Coleman was named SEC Pitcher of the Year and Florida first baseman Preston Tucker and LSU reliever Matty Ott were named SEC Co-Freshmen of the Year by a vote of the league’s 12 head baseball coaches.
