As we head into week five of the Pac 10 season, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the conference is in the midst of a major down year. We knew the conference would take a step back, but it’s gone to an extreme this year and right now it looks like only two teams, Arizona St. and Oregon St., will make a regional. There are a few teams trying to salvage what’s left of their season and make a late run for that third place conference finish and possible regional spot that could go with it. The Pac-10 was 7-0 in games played on Wednesday.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal scored twice in the third inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 9-6 victory over Santa Clara Wednesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 13-8 overall and the Broncos dropped to 10-8. The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore right-hander Yasser Clor, who improved his record to 3-0 by throwing a career-high 5.1 innings with six hits, four runs, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Miller earned his first collegiate save by throwing the final 3.2 innings (five hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts). Sophomore right fielder Mark Canha, who is leading the Bears with a .398 average, had a two-run single in the third, while senior third baseman Michael Brady, sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, junior first baseman Blake Smith, junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, freshman left fielder Danny Oh and junior catcher Dylan Tonneson all had RBI in the fourth inning. Oregon and Washington both fall in non-conference action Tuesday.

EUGENE, Ore. - Blake Crosby hit the first grand slam out of PK Park on Tuesday afternoon, but unfortunately for the Ducks, Crosby was sporting a Sacramento State uniform, and the senior first baseman helped lead the Hornets to a 10-5 victory.

No. 10 UC Irvine Out-Slugs Washington, 17-13

SEATTLE - A ninth-inning sacrifice fly from DJ Crumlich broke a 13-13 tie as the No. 10 UC Irvine baseball team out-slugged Washington for a 17-13 win Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Cal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]

TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive night, a strong starting pitching performance led the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team to victory over Arizona, as Josh Spence earned the win in a 7-3 victory on Saturday. New Mexico State's Leo Aguirre

Fresno State. Fresno State lost two of three against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene this weekend. In game one on Friday the Bulldogs lost a pitching duel 1-0 on Friday. Oregon’s Andrew Schmidt hit a walk-off single with two outs giving the Ducks the victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,777. Holden Sprague pitched 7.2 innings giving up just four hits and walking just one.

On Saturday Oregon’s bats pushed them to a 7-1 victory over Fresno State. The Ducks scored two runs in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Fresno State starter Sean Bonesteele lasted just 2.1 innings giving up five runs, all earned and allowed five hits. He also walked four batters.
