TrevorBauerUCLA LOS ANGELES – Sophomore right-hander Trevor Bauer (2-0) struck out five batters in four scoreless frames, allowing one hit and two walks, to lead the Blue Team past the Gold Team, 5-0, in a three-game sweep of the Blue-Gold World Series at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday evening (seven innings).

Bauer faced three batters over the minimum through four innings. The native of Valencia, Calif., worked out of a one-out jam with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth, recording a strikeout and inducing a groundout to finish his final fall outing. Bauer also picked up the victory for the Blue Team in Game 1 on Monday.

PatMurphyASU Mark Rafferty who contributes to this site and runs PitchForkNation.com has informed me that Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy resigned effective immediately according to a press release from ASU. Murphy was set to enter his 16th season with the Sun Devils program. He led the Sun Devils to the College World Series four times while being a dominant team in the Pac-10 conference winning it the last three seasons. TobyGerhardt Toby Gerhart has a tough decision coming his way. A star baseball player for Stanford, Gerhart is also making a lot of noise as a running back for the Cardinal football team this season. Gerhart ranks near the top in touchdowns and rushing yards so far this season, with whispers about a chance at the Heisman, but he has also finished the 2009 spring as one of Stanford’s top baseball players.

Rutgers Baseball Announces 2010-2011 Recruiting Class

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 19, 2009) – Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill has announced the signing of seven scholastic standouts to National Letters of Intent.

The group includes infielder Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.), outfielders Joseph D’Annunzio (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Brian O’Grady (Warminster, Pa.), catcher Michael Zavala (Randolph, N.J.) and pitchers Charlie Lasky (Freehold, N.J.), Slater McCue (Radnor, Pa.) and Andrew Sullivan (Monroe, N.J.).

USCFallBall LOS ANGELES — The USC baseball team wraps up its fall practice schedule with the Cardinal/Gold World Series, Thursday-Saturday (November 19-21), at Dedeaux Field. Thursday’s game will start at 2:45 p.m. with a 1:45 p.m. start on Friday. Saturday’s start will be determined later.

USC returns 24 letterwinners from last year’s squad, including infielder/pitcher Ricky Oropesa (.314, 13 HR, 48 RBI in 2009) and right-handed pitcher Andrew Triggs (5-3, 3.96 ERA, 75.0 IP, 50 SO).

MattSchwenkePhoto Former UCLA baseball player Matt Schwenke passed away on Tuesday at his home in Trabuco Hills, Calif.

Schwenke, 37, played at UCLA from 1991-93, serving as the team’s starting catcher for three consecutive seasons. Selected in the ninth round of the 1993 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Schwenke enjoyed a six-year career in professional baseball and earned his degree in history at UCLA.

Utah signs Eight for 2011

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Five high school players and three junior college transfers will join the Utes next season. Coming from high school are Trey Nielsen (3B, Skyline HS, Utah), Cory Hunt (2B, Jordan HS, Utah), Ben Mordini (RHP, Cherry Creek HS, Colo.), Luke West (RHP, Juan Diego Catholic HS, Utah), Josh Alexander (OF, Mountain Pointe HS, Arizona) while James Brooks (SS/Utility, Cochise College, Arizona), Derek Christensen (RHP, SLCC, Utah) and Dustin Hobbs (RHP/Yavapai College) are the junior college transfers.

DustinAckleyUNC Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com recently put out his list of the Top Hitters during the 2000’s which is led by Dustin Ackley of North Carolina. He hit over .400 in each of his three seasons in Chapel Hill including playing in the College World Series during each season.

RobRasmussenHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 70 in our countdown with UCLA junior LHP Rob Rasmussen. He picked up four letters at Pasadena Polytechnic School in Pasadena California. He had a career record of 38-2 with an ERA of 1.04 while striking out 492 batters in only 248.2 innings. In his entire high school career, he only gave up 37 earned runs. He picked up several awards in his high school career including being named a third-team All-American by Baseball America and first-team All-State honors from CalHi Sports.
