BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Sean Leary announced the addition of 11 student-athletes to the Mountain Hawks baseball program on Tuesday. The list includes nine incoming freshmen and two transfers, from across the nation. The class of 2013 is comprised of Casey Atkins (The Woodlands, Tex.), Steven Ball (Blacksburg, Va.), Scott Hansen (Saddle Brook, N.J.), Alex Jacquez (Dunn Loring, Va.), Thomas O’Malley (Oakland, Calif.), Ryan Patrick (Avon Lake, Ohio), Cameron Phillips (Falls Church, Va.), Brandon Sady (Maple Glen, Pa.), and John Saleh (Wilmette, Ill.). “We expect this class to come in and contribute as freshmen,” Leary said. “There are both pitchers and position players that should immediately compete for time this upcoming spring.” Read the rest of this entry »

Here is your recap of the Cape Cod Baseball League for July 10th.
Bourne defeated Yarmouth-Dennis 7-5 behind Nick Schwaner (New Orleans) who went 2-5 including three RBI. He hit a three run homer in the third inning which tied up the game at the time. Box Score

I came across this interesting article about Navy graduate Jonathan Johnston who recently talked with Bus Leagues Baseball about his minor league baseball career. Johnston had a lengthy article written about him back in November about how he was removed from minor league baseball by the Navy and forced to get back into the Navy full-time. In the second day of action at the Austin (Tx) Regional, the elimination game featured a matchup between Army from the Patriot League and Texas State of the Southland Conference. The first game saw Boston College as the 3 seed take on the 2 seed Texas State. Texas State built a 5-2 lead going into the top of the 9th inning. But, Boston College comes storming back to take a 8-5 lead in the top of the 9th. Texas State Paul Goldschmidt delivered a two run Home Run to cut the Eagles lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the inning but were not able to get closer.

Share Texas will be hosting the regional at the newly refurbish UFCU-Disch Falk Field. The last time Texas held a regional at the friendly confines was back in 2006 and Texas will be looking to get back on track in this regional. Joining Texas will be the the two seed Texas State, which is from the Southland Conference where they won the regular season title but lost in the Championship game to Sam Houston State. The three seed will be Boston College who is making their first appearance in the NCAA Tourney in 42 years. They finished the regular season 3rd in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. The 4th seed comes from the Patriot League with the Army Black Knights. They won the Patriot League tournament in a two game sweep over Lafayette to earn the automatic bid. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Matt Fouch allowed just six hits and two unearned runs over eight solid innings in the opener and Ben Koenigsfeld permitted eight hits and one run over eight dominant frames in the second game as Army captured its third Patriot League championship in six years and fifth conference crown overall by sweeping Lafayette, Saturday afternoon at Doubleday Field. LEWISBURG, Pa. – No one, not even Lafayette head coach Joe Kinney, expected Sunday’s starter, Ryan Hanna, to pitch seven innings after throwing three-plus innings on Saturday. Hanna defied expectations, however, and his seven innings of one-run ball helped advance the Leopards to the Patriot League Championship series with a 10-2 win over Bucknell. LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team proved it’s a resilient bunch when the squad rebounded from a game one loss to Bucknell in the Patriot League semifinals to put up 20 runs in a 20-9 game two victory. Center Valley, Pa. – The 2009 Patriot League Baseball Tournament opens up this weekend, with No. 4 seed Lafayette visiting No. 1 Bucknell and No. 3 Holy Cross going to No. 2 Army. Both series are best-of-three affairs, with a doubleheader set for Saturday and single game, if necessary, on Sunday. Both series will begin at Noon on Saturday, while game three would be set for Noon at Bucknell and 1 p.m. at Army on Sunday.
