ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been released, API Management and Marketing announced today. Twenty-seven games will be held February 20-22, 2009, at venues in St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Dunedin, FL, highlighted by Friday and Saturday evening doubleheaders at Knology Park and Bright House Field. The Penn State baseball team will begin its fall schedule Sunday when it faces Bucknell at 11 a.m. at Medlar Field in University Park, Pa. The Nittany Lions are scheduled to face the Bison during the regular season on March 31st at home, as well.
Bucknell went 30-24-2 last spring. The Nittany Lions finished at 27-31. Penn State defeated the Bison, 8-3, in the two teams’ last meeting in 2008.

Two of the nation’s most prominent collegiate athletic conferences have come to an agreement to participate in a unique and ground-breaking season-opening baseball tournament in Florida. The inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, will feature 27 games February 20-22, 2009, at various spring training venues in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, API Marketing announced today.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to Ohio State but today, teams were dropping like flies from Big Ten Tournament competition. This started with the first game between Illinois and Indiana which was an elimination match between the two teams.
Indiana 14 Illinois 7
Despite the score, it was actually quite an exciting game. Indiana continued with trend of scoring early and often by putting 3 runs up on the board in the first inning. This was done by their simple strategy of a) get Jason Hervey on base and b) have Josh Phegley drive him in. For the game, Hervey was 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored and Phegley was 4 for 4 with 2 homers and 6 RBI. Read the rest of this entry »

On the second day, we had three games on the docket, so let’s get straight to the action.
Indiana 10 Ohio State 8
In the first game, both teams were facing elimination and tension was a bit high both on the field and in the stands. By the time I got to Fisher Stadium in the top of the first, Indiana had already scored two runs. By the time I found a seat, Jake Hale had balked and Ohio head coach was having a conversation with the ump. Wednesday was the first day of the 2008 Big Ten Baseball Tournament hosted by first place University of Michigan. The tourney was held in its newly renovated stadium. At least it’s new to me. I remember at last year’s tournament, they were beginning construction on it. At any rate, it’s very nice, looking very first class.

Down 6-4 heading into the eighth, the Canisius College baseball team scored seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to defeat Penn State 11-6 in University Park, Pa. on Monday.
Senior Ryan Asis and junior Kevin Mailloux each had three hits for Canisius (14-2). Asis and junior Kevin Mahoney each scored three runs for the Griffs while Mahoney led the team with three RBIs as Asis and senior Adam Donato each drove in two. Read the rest of this entry »

Share CSTV continues their season previews with Eric Sorensen checking in on the Big Ten and the Big 12. Sorensen predicts that Michigan will win the Big Ten after a great run into the Super Regionals last season. He puts Minnesota and Ohio State as contenders with Penn State as the darkhorse. The full preview is available here. He also checks in on the Big 12 which is one of the top conferences in the country. He states that the Big 12 is wide open with the favorites being Texas, Missouri, and Texas A&M. He lists Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State as contenders with Kansas as a darkhorse. Share The Penn State Baseball Program played three intra-squad scrimmages over the weekend with the Blue team winning on Friday by a score of 3-1 and on Saturday 4-0. The White team prevented the weekend sweep by winning on Sunday 5-0. A recap of the weekend is available here.

Share The Penn State Baseball Program played two scrimmages on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, The teams played until a 2-2 tie which was ended because both teams ran out of pitchers. The White team scored two runs in the first inning off of Blue starter Mike Lorentson. The game would stay 2-0 until the fourth inning when Grant Youngblood got a two out walk. He proceeded to move to second on a single from Mike Deese. Youngblood would then steal third base and would advance home as the throw got away to put the Blue team behind 2-1. The game would stay 2-1 until the ninth inning when with two outs Mike Deese hitting a double and coming home on a single from Joe Blackburn. The scrimmage on Monday was won by the White team 3-1. The White team would use a two run sixth inning to grab the victory. The score was tied at one in the sixth when Jack Greenberg got a leadoff walk moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from freshman catcher Bobby Jacobs. Jacobs would get moved to second on a pass ball and then scored on a single from Rob Yodice. The full recap from the scrimmages is available here.
