How do you feel about the fall and where your team now stands?

I was pleased with the progress of our team this fall. We had a few injuries that I am concerned about, but the majority of the fall was injury-free and productive. Our objectives this fall were clear and my staff and I felt very good about how we took to the style of play and the focus and intensity of the team was solid. We need to continue to improve in all areas - get stronger and quicker.

Former University of Memphis pitcher Brandon Rowan has joined the Pitt baseball coaching staff announced head coach Joe Jordano. Rowan, who most recently held the head coaching position at Crichton College in Memphis, Tenn., joins the Panthers’ staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

“I am very pleased to have a coach of Brandon Rowan’s character and experience join our staff,” said head coach Jordano.

Hofstra 12 Coppin State 3

Hempstead, NY- Hofstra scored three or more runs in the first three innings during which Matt Kougasian had four RBI and Nick Panzarella had three RBI as the Pride defeated Coppin State, 12-3, Wednesday afternoon. With the victory the Pride improve to 8-16 while the Eagles fall to 3-23.

Hofstra jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. After the first three runners reached base for the Pride, Kougasian drove a run home with a sacrifice fly for the first run. STATESBORO, Ga. – The Boston College (2-1, 0-0 ACC) baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series to Georgia Southern (1-2, 0-0 SoCon), 18-6, Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Pitt Panthers have announced their 2008 schedule. They will open the season on February 22nd when they take on Virginia Tech in the IMICHOTEL INN-vitational in Conway SC. They will also take part in the Keith Leclair Invitational on March 7-9th and the Papa John’s Challenge from March 10th-16th in West Palm Beach FL. They will also play a three game out of conference series at Youngstown State on March 1st and 2nd while hosting the Panther Classic with Central Michigan and Coppin State from May 5th-7th. The Big East schedule opens up with a trip to West Virginia from March 21st-23rd and they will also travel to conference opponents Seton Hall, Cincinnati, and Villanova. They will also host UConn, Georgetown, St. John’s, and Louisville.

The Pittsburgh Panthers and the Charlotte 49ers have started up Fall practice at each school. The Panthers finished the 2007 season with a 27-27 record and a 15-11 record in the Big East conference. Charlotte is coming off an NCAA appearance in the Columbia (SC) regional where they held their own against South Carolina and NC State. They won the Atlantic 10 conference with a 23-4 conference record and an overall record of 49-12.

Villanova 3 Notre Dame 2

Jim Gillin hit a solo homer in the fourth inning which proved to be the winning run as the Villanova Wildcats eliminated Notre Dame from the Big East Tournament. Villanova got a solid pitching performance from Jordan Ellis as he allowed both runs in his seven innings of work. Josh Eidell picked up the save by pitching two perfect innings including a save.

UConn 5 Pittsburgh 2

The UConn Huskies got eight strong innings from Matt Tarsi as they knocked the Pittsburgh Panthers out of the Big East Tournament. The Huskies were led on offense by Dennis Donavan who hit a two run homer in the third inning. The Panthers top offensive threat on the day was Dan Lopez who went 3-4.

USF 2 St. John’s 0

Chris Delaney held the Red Storm to only two hits in 6.1 innings as his USF Bulls picked up a 2-0 victory over St. John’s in the Big East Tournament. Dexter Butler and Addison Maruszak each got an RBI to account for all the runs in the game. Brendan Monaghan got two hits for St. John’s as he was the only player in the game to have multiple hits.

Louisville 8 Rutgers 1

Louisville starter Justin Marks gave up only 1 run in six innings to lead his Cardinals to an 8-1 victory over Rutgers. Kyle Hollander and Trystan Magnuson combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief. Louisville was led on offense by Chris Dominguez who went 3-5 with 2 RBI.

The Big East Conference Tournament starts on Tuesday in Brooklyn NY. The top 8 teams are invited to the tournament and split into two different double elimination brackets. The two winners will meet on Saturday for a winner take all championship game. The full brackets are available here. The Big East Tournament starts at 10 am on Tuesday with Louisville taking on Villanova. At 1 pm, Rutgers will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The last two games on the opening day will take place at 5 pm with Pittsburgh playing University of South Florida and the number 1 seeded St. John’s Red Storm playing UConn at 8 pm in the nightcap.
