Baylor 7 Texas State 2

WACO, Texas - Baylor erased a two-run deficit with a four-run fifth, and Randall Linebaugh recorded a season-high seven strikeouts as the Bears defeated Texas State 7-2 in midweek action Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears (29-20) improved to 20-10 at home this season; Baylor has recorded at least 20 home wins in each of Baylor Ballpark’s 10 seasons. FSU 13 Stetson 3

DeLand, Fla. - Third-ranked Florida State (36-7) registered its seventh consecutive non-conference victory with a 13-3 win over Stetson (19-27) Tuesday night in front of 2,751 at Melching Field, the eighth largest crowd in stadium history. The Seminoles reached the double-digit run plateau for the fourth straight game against the Hatters outscoring Stetson 60-9 during the stretch. The Quinnipiac Bobcats heading north to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders in a single game on Saturday. The Bobcats were able to pick up a 7-3 victory at Fitton Field behind strong pitching from Andy Mayer and Chris Gloor. John Delaney led them at the plate by going 3-5 with a long home run that ended up on Route 290 which is the first time in many years that a ball have reached that area. The CBB will be at the Quinnipiac-Holy Cross game on Saturday between the two New England schools. Quinnipiac enters with a 2-8 overall record while Holy Cross is 4-10 on the year. Quinnipiac’s last game was Sunday when they finished a three game set with the Spartans where the Bobcats won the first game but lost the final two. Somerset, NJ — Defending Northeast Conference champion Monmouth sits atop the 2008 NEC Baseball Coaches Poll as the favorite to capture its fourth league title. The Hawks received six first-place nods to finish ahead of Quinnipiac in the voting. Central Connecticut State, a three-time champion this decade, claimed third. The Yale Bulldogs have released their 2008 schedule. They will open the season on March 1st when they start a three game set against George Washington. They will then head out on a 15 day road trip where they will play 15 games against seven different opponents including perennial national power South Carolina on March 11th and 12th. The Bulldogs will play conference opponents Princeton, Cornell, Harvard, and Brown at Yale Field. The Bulldogs have conference road games against Penn, Columbia, Brown, and Dartmouth. Yale will play interstate rival UConn in Storrs on March 26th and Quinnipiac in Hamden on April 2nd. The full schedule for the Bulldogs is available here.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats knocked off the Yale Bulldogs over the weekend by a score of 5-2. The Bobcats took advantage of a key Bulldog error in the bottom of the third which gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead. The Bobcats would extend the lead to get the 5-2 victory. In the consolation game, Southern Connecticut State knocked off New Haven 8-2. A full recap is available here.

Monmouth 7 Central Connecticut State 1

Monmouth advance to the Northeast Conference Championship game with a 7-1 victory over Central Connecticut State in a winner bracket game on Friday afternoon. Monmouth got six innings from Ryan Buch as he let up one run on five hits to up his record to 9-2. Kyle Breese pitched three scoreless innings while giving up only one hit to pick up his first save of the season. The offense leader for the Hawks was Kyle Messineo who went 4-4. CCSU starter Ken Kerski only lasted 3.1 innings while giving up five runs to drop his record to 7-2.

Quinnipiac 4 Mount St. Mary’s 1

The Bobcats kept their hopes alive of a NEC Conference Championship by knocking off Mount St. Mary’s in an elimination game 4-1. Quinnipiac starter Pat Egan pitched a complete game three hitter as he kept the Mount St. Mary’s offense off balance throughout the game and send the Bobcats to another elimination game to follow later in the evening. Egan’s record on the season goes to 4-3 while Mount St. Mary’s starter Andrew Germuth gets the loss to drop to 8-5. The Bobcat offense was led by Tim Binkoski who went 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Central Connecticut State 5 Quinnipiac 0

The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils ended intrastate rival Quinnipiac’s season with a 5-0 shutout victory in the last game on Friday evening which was an elimination game for each squad. Pat Scribner was masterful as he pitched a complete game shutout while striking out twelve batters and walking none. His record goes to 6-6 while Quinnipiac starter Chris Gloor gets the loss to drop his record to 4-2. The Blue Devils advance to the Championship game on Saturday against Monmouth where they have to defeat the Hawks twice to win the NEC Championship and get a spot in the NCAA Regionals.

Virginia 5 VCU 4

The Virginia Cavaliers picked up a 5-4 walkoff victory over Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday night. Tyler Cannon hit a two out single to drive in Tim Henry with the winning run. Sean Doolittle led the Cavs by going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Andrew Carraway picked up the victory in relief by pitching 1.1 scoreless innings to up his record to 5-0 while Rams reliever Mick Mattaliano pitched 3.1 innings while giving up only the losing run in the ninth to even his record at 2-2.

Virginia Tech 12 Liberty 9

The Virginia Tech Hokies got ten hits and Liberty committed seven errors as the Hokies easy got by the Flames of Liberty in Blacksburg on Tuesday. Bryan Thomas went 3-5 with 2 RBI to lead the Hokie offense. Rhett Ballard got the victory in relief for the Hokies by giving them six strong innings while limiting the Flames to three runs. His record is now 6-2. Liberty reliever Ryan Page picked up the loss as he gave up two unearned runs in his two innings of work to drop his record down to 2-3.

Boston College 13 Quinnipiac 2

Boston College continued their hot hitting as they knocked around the Bobcats pitching for 18 hits and 13 runs. Johnny Ayers led the Eagles attack by going 4-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Ted Ratliff pitched eight strong innings while giving up no runs on four hits and striking out ten batters as his record heads to 5-2. Ryan Walfield picked up the loss by giving up seven runs in 3.2 innings of work to put his record at 1-1.

Maryland 1 Towson 0

Four Maryland pitchers combined on a four hit shutout over Towson which broke a Terps losing streak of six games. Brad Taylor pitched 3.2 innings in relief to pick up the victory to up his record to 1-0 while Brett Cecil got his eighth save of the season. Nate Curd pitched four innings in relief for the Tigers but picked up the loss to drop his record to 1-4.

The Dead Weight from the CWS is now gone after Quinnipiac lost to Miami (OH) by a score of 35-8. This was the most runs scored in a CWS game and broke a ton of records. The game took only 3 hours and 27 minutes to play. That is pretty quick saying that 43 runs were scored. Miami know moves on to face the Longhorns of Texas who lost to Arkansas by a score of 9-2. We know that Auggie will have the troops ready for the RedHawks offensive attack.

My Harvard Crimson did the old 2 and out for the Ivy League team. They lost on Friday night to defending national champion Cal State Fullerton 19-0. They came back tonight against a very strong Missouri team and scored 6 runs but gave up a whooping 14 runs.

The biggest surprise of this tournament has been the play of Army. They received a great performance by Nick Hill who dominated the Seminoles allowing only two hits in nine innings but walked 5 guys and his defense made three errors behind him. The Seminoles pulled out the victory by winning the game 3-2. Army came back on Saturday and beat South Alabama by a score of 8-5. They will take on Auburn in an elimination game tomorrow at Dick Howser Stadium.

The UVA Cavs who were finialist in the ACC Tournament bailed out of the Tourney today by losing to The Ohio State University by the slimmest of margins in a 2-1 game. The biggest news out of the Corvallis Regional is the performance of St. John’s stud closer Craig Hansen who got his first start in over 2 seasons when he beat the Cavs in the opening game in the regional 5-3. St. John’s is without their best starting pitcher in Anthony Varvaro who throws in the mid 90’s and has a very solid curveball. He is expected to have surgery in the near future for the problem.
