Rivals College Baseball Editor Kendall Rogers has put out some interesting articles over the last week. The first article focuses on some head coaches around the nation that have failed to live up to expectations. He lists South Florida’s Lelo Prado as disappointing in his first two years in Tampa. I tend to disagree with Rogers since it takes longer then two years to develop a solid program. He brings up Tony Gwynn who has been an absolute disaster with the San Diego State program over the last six years only finishing over .500 in 2004 with a 35-29 record and in 2008 when they went 31-28. CORAL GABLES, Fla. - For the second time in the last four games, a walk-off home run propelled No. 1 Miami to a win. Junior left fielder Dave DiNatale sent the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 11th over the fence in left field as top-ranked Miami walked off with a 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday night at Mark Light Field. Junior Frank Pesanello hit what was the eventual game-winning, pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to guide the Northeastern University baseball team to an 8-6 victory over the Rhode Island Rams at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, Rhode Island on Tuesday evening.
Pesanello’s homer was his sixth of the season, putting him second on the team behind captain Mike Lyon, who has eight on the season. Lyon, who has been anchoring the Husky attack all season, led the team with three hits, including two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Read the rest of this entry »

KINGSTON, RI (3/22/08) – Temple scored seven runs in the fourth inning and won for the fourth straight game with a 9-6 victory over Rhode Island on Saturday at Bill Beck Field. Junior Kyle Obal (Derwood, MD / Sherwood) had four hits and two RBI, while freshman Byron McKoy (Charlotte, NC / Independence) was a triple away from the cycle and had three hits. Junior Matt Mongiardini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) improved to 4-0 with six innings on the mound and senior Arshwin Asjes (Willemstad, Curacao / Cheverus-ME) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. The College Baseball Blog will be making the trip down to Kingston RI to check in on the Charlotte 49ers and Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. The 49ers enter the weekend ranked as the 25th team in the country by the NCBWA. The 49ers have an overall record of 26-6 and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers weekend starters all have ERA’s under 2.66.

URI Game Notes
The CBB will try to head to Cambridge on Sunday (weather permitting) to take in the Harvard-Yale doubleheader which is a key Red Rolfe Division showdown in the Ivy League Conference. The Crimson have a 5-3 record in the conference while Yale is 3-5. Both teams are looking to pick up some key wins hoping to get into the Ivy League Championship series at the end of the year.

The URI Baseball team started the 2007 season last weekend with a visit to FIU. They lost 3 out of the four games but Head Coach Jim Foster was impressed with how the team hit on the weekend. The full article about the 2007 Rhody Rams is available from The Good Five Cent Cigar (URI Student newspaper, Yes, I know it is a weird name).

The A-10 Conference has released their 2007 Pre-Season Baseball Poll. They have picked Charlotte to win the title behind third baseman Aaron Bray’s potent bat. The defending champion St. Louis and URI round out the top three. It should be an interesting season in the A-10 conference like usual and the full press release on the poll is available here.
