I know we post a ton of links to Rivals articles but they do an excellent job reporting on the College Baseball landscape. Kendall Rogers daily column today focuses on the Top Ten college baseball stadium in the country. He has the usual suspects on the list like Arkansas and Florida State leading the group. Rice, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Texas, Baylor, Ole Miss, and Auburn are all mentioned. The biggest surprise in the list is the fact that he includes Penn State’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park which opened during the summer of 2006. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas vs. Rice- Courtesy of Donald J Boyles
Anytime that Texas and Rice get together for a baseball game in the regular season or in the fall neither team likes to lose. There was a very nice crowd at the Dell Diamond today to watch these two teams get after it. Texas got on the board in the first when Tucker(#2) drew a lead off walk off of Rice starter Ryan Berry. Tucker moved to 2nd on a steal and then on an error on the throw from Diego Seastrunk took 3rd base. Tucker came on in on a ground out to 1st. Read the rest of this entry »

Augie Garrido Talking with Moldenhauer- Picture from Donald J Boyles

This story originally appeared in the Dallas Morning News and is being re-publish with the permission of the Author Brian Davis.
For years, college baseball coaches have divvied up an NCAA-maximum 11.7 scholarships among 30 to 40 players. Learning how coaches manage those scholarships can be sobering for parents who believe their son is a future star.
“As far as the numbers go, with 11.7 scholarships, it doesn’t go very far,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said.
As one might expect, better recruits get more scholarship money. A coach may offer a top recruit thousands for tuition, room and board, a figure that could be 70 to 80 percent of a full scholarship.

The LSU late-inning magic continues as the Tigers, who were on the verge of elimination in the Super Regionals before rallying to earn a trip to Omaha, staved off elimination from the College World Series by scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 6-5 decision and send Rice home.
Rice did itself no favors, as pitcher Cole St. Clair hit Sean Ochinko on an 0-2 count, and an error by shortstop Rick Hague allowed the Tigers to load the bases. Blake Dean then knocked a 1-0 pitch to the left field wall, clearing the bases and giving LSU its first lead of the game, along with the victory. Read the rest of this entry »

It was Rice’s opening game of the College World Series on Sunday, but it was so much more to Tracy Kuhlman.
She made the trip from Houston as a tribute to her grandfather, who died just a few weeks before his beloved Owls competed in Omaha. It was a trip the two planned to make together before George “Poppie” Thomen — Rice, class of 1941 — passed away May 28 at age 89.
“It’s such an honor to be sitting here today,” Tracy said. “My grandfather would have gotten such a kick out of this.”
George wasn’t at the game, but his spirit certainly was. His Rice baseball cap was in the team dugout in hopes of bringing the team good luck.
