Fighting Illini Wrap Up Successful Summer
A number of Fighting Illini finished their summer seasons with great success in recent weeks, as Casey McMurray’s Santa Barbara Foresters won the National Baseball Congress World Series, Joe Bonadonna and Brandon Wikoff finished second in the Northwoods League playoffs with the Madison Mallards and Nick Stockwell led the Lombard Orioles to a second-place finish at the Stan Musial World Series. Fecteau Comes To Upstate As Volunteer Assistant Baseball Coach

LYNCHBURG, Va.– A.J. Yoder’s single up the middle plated Brian Sandridge with the winning run in the 16th inning as VMI defeated Liberty 6-5 on Saturday evening in Big South Conference action at Worthington Stadium.

PROVO, Utah - The TCU Horned Frogs erased an early 3-0 deficit with a six-run second inning and cruised to the 13-4 victory over BYU at Larry H. Miller Field Friday night. The victory ensures the Frogs the series win as they continue their hot play in the month of April. It was another offensive explosion for TCU as they scored 13 times on 15 hits. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. The Scarlet Knights lost a ton of talent after a strong 2007 season which saw them win the Big East Regular Season and Conference Tournament championship to receive the automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament before bowing out in the Charlottesville Regional. Dane Truxell of The Daily Targum (RU Student paper) provides an excellent article discussing how the team is trying to repeat the successes from 2007 and how they are going to replace All-American Todd Frazier. Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com has released an article about fall story lines around the Big East conference. The article discusses how Louisville’s run to the CWS will impact the conference. Some people around the country forget that Louisville finished in third place in 2007 behind Rutgers and St. John’s. It also discusses how the uniform start date will impact the conference but all schools need to put some money into their respective program. It also mentions how South Florida is one of the programs to watch in the Big East in 2008 and beyond. The full article is available here.

 The Charlottesville Regional was postponed from remnants of a tropical storm which is riding up the Atlantic Ocean. Rutgers and Oregon State will play an elimination game tomorrow at 1 pm and Virginia will play the winner at 6 pm in the Championship round. If UVA loses, the final game of the regional will take place on Tuesday at a TBA time.

 Rutgers 11 Lafayette 10
Rutgers scored four runs in the top of the eighth on homers from Frank Meade and Dave Williams which were two run homers. Lafayette tried to rally with a single run in the eighth and two runs in the bottom of the ninth but were not able to tie up the game. Rutgers will play Oregon State on Sunday in the loser’s bracket. Lafayette ends the season with a 33-20 record.

UVA 7 Oregon State 4
The Virginia Cavaliers outlasted Oregon State in 13 innings as they advance to the championship game in the Charlottesville Regional on Saturday. Casey Lambert pitched 6.2 innings in relief while giving up only 1 run on five hits. Brandon Guyer and Brandon Marsh got into a collosion in the game and their status is unavailable at the time of this post. Oregon State will play Rutgers on Sunday while Virginia will play the winner in the championship game of the regional.

The Virginia Cavaliers opened up their run to Omaha with a 5-1 victory over Lafayette. Sean Doolittle gave the Cavaliers 7.2 innings while giving up 1 run on nine hits. Brandon Guyer hit a key three run homer in the first inning to set the pace for the Cavs offense. Virginia will play defending national champion Oregon State on Saturday while Lafayette will play Rutgers on Saturday in an elimination game.

Joe Paterson let up one run in six innings as he led the defending national champion Beavers to a 5-1 victory over Rutgers. John Wallace led the offense with 2 RBI. Oregon State will take on Virginia on Saturday while Rutgers will play Lafayette.
