SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Keith Cantwell (Tinton Falls, N.J.) (5-2) earned his team-leading third complete game and tied the team lead with his second complete game shutout after striking out six batters and allowing no walks and seven hits to defeat Georgetown, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Owen T. QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Joe Panik had five RBI and two of St. John’s five home runs in a 16-8 victory against Cincinnati. Greg Hopkins, Joe Witkowski and Tim Morris each added home runs and every Red Storm starter had at least one hit. Hopkins had three RBI, while Morris and Witkowski added two apiece to lead St. John’s (20-13, 9-5). Bruce Kern (3-2) earned the win, tallying 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. T.J. JAMAICA, N.Y. – Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) recorded a six-out save to become the University of Cincinnati’s all-time saves leader as the Bearcats downed St. John’s 11-8 Friday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Geglein struck out four batters and scattered just two hits to earn his 16th career save, surpassing Curtis Moak, who recorded 15 career saves from 1998-01. Read the rest of this entry »

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior pitcher Casey Gaynor (Toms River, N.J.) tossed a complete-game to earn the victory on his 22nd birthday as Rutgers cruised to a 5-2 victory over Connecticut in game one of a baseball doubleheader Friday at Bainton Field. SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Doug Elliot finished the Huskies’ BIG EAST series finale against Seton Hall with a 4-for-5 performance as the University of Connecticut baseball team dominated the Pirates 10-3 on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the victory, the Huskies even their record out to 14-14 and improve to 4-5 in conference play.
The Huskies jumped to an early lead with a pair of three-run innings to take a 6-0 lead by the fifth inning. In the top of the first inning, Matt Burnett got things started with an RBI single to center field, followed by George Springer’s sixth homerun of the season, a two run shot over the left field wall. (4-0) struck out seven batters while allowing only one earned run in his second complete game of the season while classmate Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) went 1-for-3 with a three run triple as Seton Hall defeated Connecticut, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the win, the Pirates ended their three-game losing streak and evened the three-game BIG EAST Conference series at one game apiece with the rubber match set for tomorrow afternoon. The University of Connecticut baseball team downed Seton Hall 7-2 in the Huskies’ first BIG EAST Conference road game of the 2009 season in South Orange, N.J.
The Huskies, now 13-13 on the year, were led by Harold Brantley, Jr., who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on the afternoon. Sophomore Mike Olt has a team-leading sixth homerun of the season to help the Huskies earn their position and compete at the Final Four.
The Huskies’ pitching staff had a stellar outing in today’s contest as senior John Folino struck out four and allowed six hits in six innings thrown. Dan Mahoney and Scott Oberg were also dominating on the hill as they combined for three innings pitched, four strikeouts and two hits. Read the rest of this entry »

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Sophomore Jaren Matthews (Teaneck, N.J.) broke a scoreless tie with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth in game one and freshman Charlie Law (Mainland, N.J.) posted 10 strikeouts to hold Cincinnati in check while Luis Feliz (New Brunswick, N.J.) put Rutgers ahead with a fifth-inning grand slam in game two as the Scarlet Knights swept a doubleheader from the Bearcats Saturday afternoon at Bainton Field.
