St.Mary'sBaseball Moraga, CA - There will be a number of new faces out at Louis Guisto Field next week when the Saint Mary’s College Baseball team begins fall practice. Head coach Jedd Soto brought in 16 student-athletes to compete for a position on the 2010 roster. The incoming class includes 10 pitchers, five infielders, two outfielders, and one catcher.

JeddSoto Moraga, CA – Saint Mary’s College Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports Mark Orr, announced a contract extension for head baseball coach Jedd Soto. Soto, the school’s third winningest coach since 1968, has received a three-year contract extension, which keeps Soto under contract through the 2012 season.

“I’m very pleased to continue Jedd Soto’s leadership of the baseball program,” said Orr. “The progress this program has had under his leadership has been impressive. His ability to recruit and develop quality student-athletes is something I look forward to seeing him continue to do for years to come.

Western Major Baseball LeagueThe Okotoks Dawgs and the Melville Millionaires have been declared co-champions of the Western Major Baseball League.

The Millionaires won the first game of what was originally scheduled to be a best-of-five series 5-3. Coty Saranthus (Southwest Mississippi CC) got the win, and Mark Hardy (British Columbia) got the loss. The game was tied 3-3 going into the ninth inning, and Kyle Barclay (Erie CC) pinch-hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI single by James Green (Houston-Victoria). Bend Elks 3, Bellingham Bells 2 (13 innings)

PeterLavin Another West Coast League game, and extra innings. CF Lucas Hileman (Baylor) came home on a wild pitch by Mitch Ludtke (Skagit Valley CC) to provide the winning run in the top of the 13th.

Both teams got excellent efforts from their starters, although they were long gone before it was over. Bend’s Peter Lavin (San Francisco) allowed eight hits over eight innings, and Bellingham’s Tyrell Poggemeyer (Skagit Valley CC, transferring to Lewis-Clark State) allowed five hits over seven innings. After giving up runs in the first two innings on RBI single by RF Cal Towey (Baylor)  and 2B Colin Stock (Saint Mary’s) coming in on a double steal, Poggemeyer retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced.

Cal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]

No. 4 ASU Takes Out Arizona 7-3

TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive night, a strong starting pitching performance led the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team to victory over Arizona, as Josh Spence earned the win in a 7-3 victory on Saturday. There was two substantial upsets on Thursday night. The biggest upset was  Illinois-Chicago scoring two runs in the top of the ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodors. TEMPE, Ariz. – Six home runs, including two each from Jason Kipnis and Carlos Ramirez, helped the No. 6 Arizona State University baseball team to a 13-5 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. Head coach Jedd Soto enters his sixth season at the helm of the Saint Mary’s baseball program with his sights set on propelling the Gaels into the national spotlight. With a loaded squad of seasoned starters and a host of younger talent pushing for playing time, the 2009 team is now in prime position to stake their claim as a WCC power in both this season and for years to come. In Coach Soto’s estimation, “This is the deepest squad, both on the mound and in the field, that I have ever had the opportunity to field in my tenure at Saint Mary’s.”

The College Baseball Blog recently had a chance to talk to Jedd Soto of Saint Mary’s College. He is entering his sixth season with the Gaels after spending the previous six seasons with Feather River College. He led the team to four season with more then 30 victories including three Regional titles and a Super Regional Title. Santa ClaraSAN BRUNO, CA – San Diego and Pepperdine were picked as favorites to win this year’s WCC regular season title in the 2009 preseason baseball poll, as voted on by the head coaches in the conference. The Toreros and Waves have already been receiving several preseason accolades by several publications as San Diego has been ranked as high as No. 11 by Baseball America, while Pepperdine was ranked No. 17 in the same poll. San Diego and Pepperdine both received 45 points, with the Toreros receiving four first place votes to three for the Waves. Santa Clara, which has received votes in several preseason publications, was picked to finish third with 35 points. Gonzaga received the last remaining first place vote, and received 30 points, to come in at fourth place, edging out San Francisco, which received 26 points, for fifth place. Rounding out this year’s poll are Loyola Marymount, with 20 points, Saint Mary’s, with 14 points, and Portland, with nine points.
