Wortham Twirls Five-Hit Shutout
USAFA, Colo. (April 25, 2008)–Jake Wortham twirled a five-hit shutout Friday, going the distance in BYU’s 22-0 victory with howling winds at the Air Force Academy.

Wortham evened his record at 3-3, retiring 14 straight before surrendering a double in the ninth inning as the Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak. The junior southpaw from Allen, Texas also recorded nine strikeouts, no walks and retired the side in order in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 13, today. Missouri senior outfielder Jacob Priday was named National Hitter of the Week, while San Diego State’s sophomore right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg was named National Pitcher of the Week. SAN DIEGO -
Pat Colwell’s two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning drove home the winning run as San Diego State defeated New Mexico, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Colwell’s heroics made a winner of junior right-hander James McLaughlin (3-0), who had just come on in the top of the inning in relief of senior starter Shane Kaufman, who had pitched brilliantly over the first 10 frames. The hit was the fifth of the day for Colwell whose safeties included a double and four singles plus a sac bunt, run scored and the all-important RBI to end the contest.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The TCU Horned Frogs have been selected to win their third straight regular season Mountain West Conference baseball championship in 2008. In a vote of the seven MWC head coaches and a select media panel, the Horned Frogs received six of a possible nine first-place votes and 60 points, while BYU (three first-place votes) received 52 points to finish second in the poll. The Cal Bears released their 2008 schedule recently which is highlighted by taking part in a tournament in San Diego where they will take on USD, Fresno State, SDSU, and Missouri. They will play a full Pac-10 schedule with UCLA, Arizona, Washington, and Oregon State visiting Berkley while Washington State, USC, Arizona State, and Stanford will welcome the Bears to their stadiums. The AP has written an article about the San Diego State Aztecs and how Tony Gwynn has basically failed to turn around the program in his first four seasons. The pressure is starting to build on Gwynn to bring the Aztecs to their first NCAA Tournament in sixteen seasons. The College Baseball staff heard from a source that Gwynn is having problems teaching his student-athletes.

The San Diego State Aztecs announced plans to host a doubleheader at Petco Park which is the home of the San Diego Padres. They will face the Michigan Wolverines in the nightcap while the San Diego Toreros will face Oklahoma in the early game. This will take place on Saturday, March 10th which is the middle day of the Round-Robin format tournament. The full article about the event is available here.

The Associated Press wrote a recent article about Tony Gwynn, the current Head Coach of San Diego State. He discusses the upcoming Hall of Fame voting in which he is probably going to be inducted to this year.
