NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Games against 2008 College World Series participants Stanford and Georgia highlight a 55-game schedule released today by Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin.

The Commodores will face 13 teams that made the NCAA tournament a year ago and 16 teams that finished with 30 or more wins.

FIRST-EVER ISLANDER BASEBALL ALUMNI GAME IS A WIN-WIN

While it may have been an 11-4 win for the current players on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team, the first-ever Islander Alumni Baseball Game held as part of the athletic department’s 10-year celebration was a win-win for both sides.

“The first-ever alumni game was a total success,” said Islander head coach Scott Malone. “We went into the game looking to bridge the gap between the Islanders of the past and the current members of the roster and I think we were able to do that. There is no doubt we intend on making the game an annual event.”

Blue Upends Gold, 6-2, In Game One Of 2008 Blue-Gold World Series

Sophomore Cole Johnson (Hudson, Ohio) allowed one earned run over 6.0 innings as the Blue knocked off the Gold, 6-2, in the opening game from the 2008 Blue-Gold World Series.

Johnson retired the first eight batters of the game before plunking freshman Tommy Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) in the bottom of the third inning.

Fresno State fans can take home the 2008 College World Series action. The official commemorative 2008 College World Series DVD Box Set will be available November 1.

Heatley’s pitching shuts down Cardinal squad

The Arkansas baseball team began its annual Cardinal-White series on Sunday afternoon with what started as a pitcher’s duel and ended with a solid 5-2 victory for the White team at Baum Stadium.

Junior Jeremy Heatley, the White squad’s starter, pitched six innings of four hit, two run baseball to pick up the win while his counterpart, junior Christian Kowalchuk was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs and seven hits over six innings.

Baseball America writer Aaron Fitt has put out his rankings of the Top 25 Recruiting Classes for 2009. It is led by Arizona State even though they lost seven recruits to the MLB draft headlined by Eric Hosmer. Fitt states that Arizona State has the best group of transfers and freshmen to replace the likes of Brett Wallace and Ike Davis. The top five is rounded out by Vanderbilt, Georgia, Kentucky, and Florida. The biggest shocks in the top 25 are the Oregon Ducks ranked in the tenth spot and Duke coming in at 25th only one spot below Florida State. Read the rest of this entry »

Huskers Host Red/White Series; Head to Iowa

The Nebraska baseball program closes the fall portion of its workouts next week with three games, including the Huskers’ first-ever fall road trip.

Nebraska will conduct its annual Red-White Series on Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Sherman Field (225 West South Street). Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with Wednesday’s game slated for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. The Huskers will then travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in the fall finale on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. There is no admission charge for any of the three games next week.

The Ole Miss Rebels will again play a rigorous schedule that features 11 teams who advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Friday.

The 2009 schedule features 33 home dates, including a non-conference series against TCU as well as conference weekends with Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and the home finale against in-state rival Mississippi State.

Mississippi State Baseball Alumni Gather Next Weekend On Campus

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Plans are moving forward for the 13th alumni baseball weekend next week at Mississippi State. The biennial event, scheduled October 18-19, is expected to draw more than 50 former baseball players and managers representing teams spanning eight decades of Mississippi State baseball to the MSU campus.

The weekend schedule kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m. with an alumni golf tournament at the MSU Golf Course, followed by a dinner in the Bryan Athletic Administration Building. Capping the weekend will be the 2008 alumni baseball game, with Diamond Dogs of the past teaming with members of the 2009 Mississippi State team in a Maroon/White game at Dudy Noble Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Alabama looks for an SEC Title

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells announced the 2009 schedule today and the Crimson Tide will play almost one-half of its regular season games against teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Crimson Tide will play 25 games against eight NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois-Chicago, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi and Vanderbilt. Those eight teams posted a 321-181 (.639) record last season. Read the rest of this entry »

The University of Kentucky had a great season in 2008 where they went 44-19. They ended up finishing in 3rd place in the Eastern Division in the SEC with a conference record of 16-14. The NCAA Baseball committee rewarded the team with the third seed in the Ann Arbor Regional. The Wildcats were knocked off in the first game of the Regional by the hosts Michigan but bounced back with a victories over Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan in a rematch. They ended up in the championship game of the regional against the Arizona Wildcats which they lost 5-3 to end the season. Read the rest of this entry »

Pickler in action at Tennessee

Jeff Pickler was added to the Arizona coaching staff on Monday morning coming over to the Wildcats after being with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an advanced scout and consultant since 2006. He spent eight seasons in the minor leagues getting time in the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, and Colorado Rockies systems after a collegiate career at Cypress (CA) College and Tennessee. Thirty-two games at Dudy Noble Field and a four-game series in Hawaii highlight a challenging 2009 Mississippi State University baseball schedule announced this week by first-year MSU head baseball coach John Cohen.

The Bulldogs usher in the Cohen era with a nine-game home stand, beginning with the BankFirst Baseball Challenge Feb. 20-22. State meets North Florida and Northern Illinois in the three-day, six-game season-opening event at Dudy Noble Field. State plays 17 of its first 21 games on the home field.

Strong pitching and a timely comeback were crucial as the Orange & White World Series kicked off Friday night at Robert M. Lindsay Field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The game ended in an 8-8 tie after the White team staged a four-run, ninth inning rally.

Friday’s contest marked the first of a seven-game intrasquad series that coincides with the beginning of the team’s fall season. Tennessee coach Todd Raleigh thinks the competition between the two squads is important.
