PROVIDENCE, R.I. โ Sophomore outfielder Junior Carlin of USF was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after helping USF sweep West Virginia for a three game lead in the conference standings. (5-2) earned his team-leading third complete game and tied the team lead with his second complete game shutout after striking out six batters and allowing no walks and seven hits to defeat Georgetown, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Owen T. QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Joe Panik had five RBI and two of St. John’s five home runs in a 16-8 victory against Cincinnati. Greg Hopkins, Joe Witkowski and Tim Morris each added home runs and every Red Storm starter had at least one hit. Hopkins had three RBI, while Morris and Witkowski added two apiece to lead St. John’s (20-13, 9-5). Bruce Kern (3-2) earned the win, tallying 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. T.J. JAMAICA, N.Y. – Senior Jake Geglein (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) recorded a six-out save to become the University of Cincinnati’s all-time saves leader as the Bearcats downed St. John’s 11-8 Friday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Geglein struck out four batters and scattered just two hits to earn his 16th career save, surpassing Curtis Moak, who recorded 15 career saves from 1998-01. Read the rest of this entry »

CINCINNATI โ The University of Cincinnati baseball team could not overcome a four-run eighth inning by Notre Dame as the Irish took the series finale, 6-2, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader. SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Doug Elliot finished the Huskies’ BIG EAST series finale against Seton Hall with a 4-for-5 performance as the University of Connecticut baseball team dominated the Pirates 10-3 on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the victory, the Huskies even their record out to 14-14 and improve to 4-5 in conference play.
The Huskies jumped to an early lead with a pair of three-run innings to take a 6-0 lead by the fifth inning. In the top of the first inning, Matt Burnett got things started with an RBI single to center field, followed by George Springer’s sixth homerun of the season, a two run shot over the left field wall. Carroll Field. With the win, the Pirates ended their three-game losing streak and evened the three-game BIG EAST Conference series at one game apiece with the rubber match set for tomorrow afternoon.
