Blake captures Player of the Week honors after leading SDSU with a .611 average in a four-game series win over IPFW. The sophomore had 11 hits, seven doubles, six runs, six RBI and a home run. He also drew one walk and only struck out once in 18 at-bats. Blake doubled in every game against the Mastodons, including hitting two doubles in each of the last three contests. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 26, today. UCF junior second baseman Shane Brown and South Dakota State sophomore infielder Jesse Sawyer were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Northeastern sophomore left-handed pitcher J.T. Ross was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Sawyer earns Player of the Week honors after leading SDSU to a 7-1 record, including a four-game sweep of WIU. He homered in six of the eight games and hit safely in all eight. For the week, Sawyer had a .500 average, scored 19 runs, had 15 RBI, 14 hits, nine home runs and two doubles. He also walked seven times, had a 1.536 slugging percentage and .641 on-base percentage. (Victoria, Tx) Chris Clemons, the Head Coach of the Expansion Victoria Generals of the Texas Collegiate League, has announced additions to his summer roster.
Chase Cleveland is junior at Henderson State where is splits time between shortstop and the pitching mound. He bats left and throws right. Clemons said he is pleased that Chase has chosen the Generals and likes his maturity and leadership.

Cal Baseball Defeats Stanford, 7-6, to Open Pac-10 Play
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of California baseball team – behind home runs from Brett Jackson and Dylan Tonneson, and stellar relief pitching from Michael Bugary and Blake Smith – defeated Bay Area rival Stanford, 7-6, Saturday in the Pac-10 opener at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved their record to 11-7 (1-0), while the Cardinal dropped to 3-9 (0-1). Cal also got strong hitting efforts from sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn (2-for-4, two RBI) and senior third baseman Michael Brady (2-for-3, two doubles, RBI). [READ MORE]

TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive night, a strong starting pitching performance led the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team to victory over Arizona, as Josh Spence earned the win in a 7-3 victory on Saturday. ELMHURST, Ill. − After winning its record 11th straight league championship a year ago, Oral Roberts was a unanimous decision to claim its 12th consecutive Summit League crown in 2009 as voted by the league’s eight head coaches.
The Golden Eagles collected seven first-place votes for a total of 49 points. Only five points separated the next three teams as Southern Utah placed second with 40 points, Centenary was third with 35 points and South Dakota State is in the fourth slot with 30 points and the final first-place vote. SDSU edged Western Illinois by one point, as the Leathernecks were selected fifth with 29 points. Oakland (17 points), IPFW (13 points) and North Dakota State (11 points) rounded out the voting.

 Former Jayhawk Ritchie Price was named the head coach at South Dakota State. At age 24, he will be the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I baseball.

Former Jayhawk Ritchie Price was named the head coach at South Dakota State. At age 24, he will be the youngest head coach in NCAA Division I baseball.
As the fall practice season winds down for the Kansas baseball team, several members of the Jayhawk family are going through the same rigors in other parts of the country. During the off-season three former Jayhawk players/coaches were promoted in the coaching ranks at other schools.

I posted on this site a few days ago that the KU-South Dakota State series was canceled but come to find out the series was rescheduled for this weekend in Minneapolis. The Kansas Media Relations department ended up putting out a press release saying the series was canceled but the Baseball program at Kansas found a way to reschedule the series in the Metrodome for the early morning hours of Saturday and Sunday. The Jayhawks lost the first game of a doubleheader early Saturday morning by a score of 6-5. Kyle Murphy led the Jayhawks with a 3-3 performance and Kyle Morrison hit a three-run homer in a losing effort. In Game 2, The Kansas Jayhawks are leading 3-2 after eight innings with the game suspended due to the field having to be cleared by 7 am for other college baseball games which have been scheduled in the Dome.
