The College Baseball Blog sent writer Nate Owen to cover the Division 3 Regional in Mansfield Connecticut on Friday. The first game of the day featured Trinity (CT) taking on Southern Maine in a winner’s bracket game. Trinity was able to walk away with a 6-0 victory. The second game of the day saw Husson defeat Babson by a score of 10-6 to eliminate Babson. The third game of the day was between Eastern Connecticut and Southern Maine which was won by Eastern Connecticut by a score of 7-2 to end Southern Maine’s season. MANSFIELD Conn. – A day after getting it done at the plate, Shawn Gilblair was dealing on the mound.

MANSFIELD Conn. – In matchup between two conference pitchers of the year, runs figured to be tough to come by.

And they were.

Trinity senior Jeremiah Bayer, the NESAC Pitcher of the Year, and Southern Maine senior Tim Therrian (9-1), the Little East Pitcher of the Year, locked in a scoreless dual until the fifth, when the third seeded Bantams scored the first of their six runs on the game, which would be all would need to move to 2-0 in New England Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The College Baseball Blog was in attendance on May 13th for the first day of action in the 2009 Division 3 New England Regional in Mansfield Connecticut. The first game of the day featured WPI taking on Suffolk College which was won by WPI by a score of 7-6. The game was WPI’s first in the NCAA Tournament in the 106 year history of their program. The second game of the day featured Babson taking on the host school of Eastern Connecticut State. Babson used a big seven run second inning to grab a 9-0 lead and hold on for a 10-6 victory. The third game of the day saw Trinity (CT) take on Westfield State. The Bantams were able to get a James Wood homer which gave them the lead for good as they picked up the 6-4 victory. The final game of the night saw Southern Maine take on Husson. Southern Maine was able to pick up a 5-4 ten inning victory on a Mike Eaton single to right field. Read the rest of this entry »

MANSFIELD Conn.- Powerful Southern Maine and sophomore Mike Eaton took a while to wake out of their slumber, but when they did, the Huskies walked off winners in the opening round on the New England Regional.

Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher. Read the rest of this entry »

Cortland's 10th-year head coach Joe Brown leads all active NCAA Division III baseball coaches with a .789 career winning percentage

The SUNY Cortland baseball team is ranked first nationally in Division III for the 2009 season in two preseason polls – one conducted by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the other by the Web site D3baseball.com.

Cortland finished 42-5 last season, including a school-record 38-game winning streak. The Red Dragons made their ninth NCAA Division III World Series appearance, all since 1995, and finished tied for seventh nationally. Cortland’s string of 16 consecutive NCAA Division III tournament berths is the longest active streak nationally.

Coach Ed Flaherty has become a regional legend and an NACB Hall of Famer in his 22 years as Head Coach of Southern Maine.  With a career record of 689 and 301 (.695 winning percentage), Coach Flaherty figures to cross into rarefied air with the potential to win his 700th game for the Huskies in 2009.  The Huskies will also be going for their third national DIII title in 2009 after falling short in the Northeast Regional against the Trinity (CT) juggernaut this past spring.  Coach Flaherty graduated from Maine, where he played baseball.  He was inducted into the University of Maine Hall of Fame in 1992, the State of Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993 and the National Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005.

Trinity College was undefeated, and rested after a day off on Saturday. The University of Southern Maine had played two games Saturday afternoon, and its pitching was stretched thin. A good combination for the Bantams, who advanced to the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball World Series on Sunday by topping Southern Maine in the New England Regional Final, 10-3. Vandysports.com’s Mike Rapp sat down with Commodore Shortstop Ryan Flaherty. “Flash”, as the ‘07 3rd Team All-American (Rivals.com) Shortstop is known, was injured last week when a routine grounder took a freak hop and popped him in the eye.

Flaherty suffered a broken orbital bone, but is expected to return to practice in the next two weeks with the help of a protective facemask.

Flaherty is riding a VU record 35 game hitting streak into 2008. As a Sophomore, Flaherty hit .381, with 23 doubles, 59 runs and 57 RBI. He was named to Team USA and has had a stellar .969 Fielding Percentage each of the past two years. Flaherty led Vanderbilt in hitting (.339) as a true Freshman.

Flash is the son of College Baseball Hall of Famer Ed Flaherty, the head coach at Southern Maine University.

The new LSU ace was spotted starting for the Hyannis Mets this past weekend by the staff of the College Baseball Blog. He is a big kid who can throw in the low 90’s with a A- curveball. He is a huge pickup for Paul Mainieri and should be a very important part of the LSU pitching staff this season.
