The tandem of Jimmy Comerota and Chad Mozingo combined for nine hits, five runs and five RBI to pace the Rice baseball team to a double-header sweep of Texas State in its first fall exhibition games Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park. The Owls won the first exhibition game over the Bobcats 8-4 and the second by a score of 5-2.

Comerota was 5-for-7 with three runs scored and three stolen bases for the two games. Mozingo was 4-for-8 with four RBI and a pair of runs. The offense was in gear and the Owls’ pitchers followed suit. Junior right-hander Ryan Berry started and worked three shutout frames with three strikeouts. Veterans Mike Ojala, Jordan Rogers, Zack Harwood and Matt Evers all saw action on the mound and newcomers like Taylor Wall and Anthony Fazio caught the coaches’ attention with solid work.

Eight-year major league veteran Scott Podsednik made a visit to the UT Arlington baseball practice on Thursday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark to visit with Maverick players and coaches. Podsednik, who currently resides in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Texas spent the 2008 season with the Colorado Rockies, and is among the major league’s best base stealers.

The UT Arlington baseball team is in the midst of its fall season, which consists of practices and intra-squads. The Mavericks had a pleasant surprise with Podsednik making a visit to their Thursday practice to discuss the game of baseball.

The TCU Horned Frog baseball team is set to hold a exhibition game against UT-Arlington Saturday morning at Lupton Stadium. The teams are slated to play an 18-inning game beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free.

“This is a great opportunity for our players, especially the young ones, to get in some good Division I competition before the actual season begins,” remarked Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle. “It also allows our fans to get a preview of our team in the fall. Our players are very excited about the chance to suit up against another school.”

The UT Arlington baseball program held its 26th Annual Alumni Weekend last Friday and Saturday with its 16th Annual Golf Tournament held at Riverside Golf Club and its 26th Annual Alumni Game at Clay Gould Ballpark. A total of 60 alums participated in the golf tournament with 38 former Mavericks in attendance for the alumni game.

The weekend began with the golf foursome of Justin Reagan (1988-90), William Rose (1989-92), John Marek (1989-90) and Paul Paramo (1989-90) winning the golf tourney title on Friday afternoon.

The alumni game was just part of the festivities on Saturday, with batting practice, a home run derby and a post-game barbeque on the schedule.

Houston Baseball Begins Fall Practice Wednesday

The University of Houston baseball team will look to build off a successful 2008 season when it begins fall practice Wednesday at Cougar Field.

Practices are tentatively set to begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be closed to the public during the week. The weekend practices will be open to all fans, and times will be announced on a week-by-week basis.

HAMMOND - With one week of fall practice under the team’s belt, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball coaching staff turns its attention from teaching the squad its fundamental system to evaluating the potential 2009 squad.

Week one focused on Southeastern’s newcomers cutting their teeth on the Lions’ system with the returnees getting a refresher course on all things Lion baseball. However, the Lion coaching staff will switch gears heading into week two.

With 15 returners and 23 newcomers, the Colonel baseball team took to the field for the first time this week in preparation for the 2009 season.

“I think we’ve had three really good practices to open the fall and the thing that is really evident about this team already is that we definitely have team speed,” remarked head coach Chip Durham. “We have position players who can really run and that makes us feel really good about being in a situation where, as we continue to develop over the fall, we really have a chance to play defense well.”

The CBB has come across 7 more College Baseball Schedules- Michigan, Columbia, Gardner Webb, St. Louis, Kansas, Southeastern Louisiana, and Virginia Tech.

Gardner Webb will play 36 home games out of a 56 2009 College Baseball Schedule. First up on the slate will be 4 game series against Canisius staring on the 20th of February.

Gardner Webb will get the Atlantic Sun Conference started with a series against Presbyterian. They will wrap the season on May 14th against Winthrop and then the Conference Tournament will start the following weekend.

“Brett had a tremendous season at Wharton this past season. It was exciting to see Brett pitch at the top of the rotation all year. We hope he can make the transition to D1 and do the same for us.”

RBIs, batting averages, home runs, ERAs, strikeouts — there are many numbers to keep track of in baseball. Some players and coaches have to watch other numbers, too, like blood glucose levels, carbohydrates, and insulin units. In the September issue of Diabetes Forecast, the consumer magazine of the American Diabetes Association, Sam Houston State University starting catcher Heath Pugh and his assistant coach, Chris Berry, who talk about playing baseball while wearing insulin pumps and the unique bond they’ve forged as athletes with diabetes.

Heath Pugh was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 14. He spent the next several months learning how to give himself insulin injections, then how to use an insulin pump. Along the way, he never gave up his drive to excel in baseball.
